Gordon Brown has just explained on TV that he has increased road tax on certain cars, including Freelanders, to reduce pollution. As he is always right this means that when we pay £400 per year tax our emissions will automatically improve. How does this happen? Maybe these clever people will put a chip in the tax disc so that when we put it on our windscreen it sends a signal to our ECU and cleans things up.
I hope they don't intend to make our cars too expensive to run and so have more room on the road for themselves. No, they are not nasty like that are they?

increases only affect new cars - the £400 tax band is for the big petrol guzzlers;) and cars before 2001 are taxed the same as any other car

I don't call my 53 TD4 Auto a gas guzzler, I will be paying £400. The motoring public has not yet woken up to the new road tax rules.

In actual fact, pollution in London has increased since the introduction of the congestion charge, due to the increase in the numder of dirty taxis and buses on the road.

You couldn't make it up!

Why are the taxis "dirty". Under new rules introduced I think last year, all taxis licensed for London have to comply with the Euro 4 emissions standard so in theory should not be contributing to pollution.

shirley that only applies to new registrations?
and dunt ferget, there's zillions of "minicabs" in London.

Not ter mention that they always take you the scenic route, so where you would have travelled 1 mile to get somewhere, they will take you 5 - and then they have to go back again!

Does a vehicle registered before March 2001 not guzzle coz if not i'll swap my September 01 TD5 for one registered before March of that year

You are rather optimistic to think you can do a swop. Your September 01 has gone down in value while a pre March has gone up. Unfortunately I sold a pre March 01 immaculate SAAB a couple of years ago, I could not afford to buy it back now!

My vehicle tax for a TD4 freelander registered after march 2001 (december 2002) is £210??
In 2009-10 its going to be £300 and in 2010-11 its £310!
Where is the £400 figure coming from?
I understand it may be £400 for petrol engined models! Am I right?

Check this out for your vehicle:

You are right for the V6 and the TD4 AUTO

Hello SJWILLW. You assumed that because two almost identical Freelanders were each fitted with the identical engine that they would fit into the same tax bracket. This reasoning is far too simple for our Brilliant PM who has decreed a different tax bracket for manuals and autos.
Due to my circumstances I now do few miles, this together with a very light right foot means the pollution from my Auto TD4 is far less than that from the average Manual TD4. Unfortunately I will pay £400 for the privilege of not having a clutch.
On the plus side I will not have the expensive bill of TD4 clutch slave cylinder replacement!

For the Auto and V6 owner - there is a special band for April 09/10 for those pre 2006 cars - K which means £300 next year and "only" the £430 band April 10/11 onwards.

Depending on when your tax is due you can probably avoid the highest rate for upto 2 1/2 years by buying a combination of 6 and 12 months when appropriate before then. Given then it's only £100 more than 09/10 rate thats an £100 extra for 3 1/2 years ownership - ) bet i spen more on repairs than that!

It does however make re-sale and long term ownership less attractive to say the least beyond 2010/11. It's going to make me pretty sick when I eventually have to shell out £430 on a 9 year old car I bought under a very different tax regime.

On a positive note, the new FL2 post 09 will have a pretty lean 179 emissions - once they introduce the stop/start technology - hope I can afford one by then.

Many thanks Bonny for the info. Both my TD4 and my son's V6 were due to be taxed end march 08. I did both for just 6 months, instead of the usual 12, in line with what you suggest. I am rather peeved that the car I bought to probably last me out will be taxed so highly by retrospective means. to change to something with lower emissions is out of the question as I would get so little in part-ex. So much for the idea of reduced pollution as I will now run my high polluter for as long as possible!
Can I hope that my extra tax will be wisely spent?

i broke a damaged o4 td4 a few months ago so i'm going to get around it by putting all the bits onto a pre march 2001 model give it a face lift so it will be an 04 car with an older plate
:D

on sky news the other day the idiot Brown said that
"under the new taxation rules most people will be the same or better off"

WHAT A PRAT

I got rid of my W 2000 DI freeby that was paid for and got finance for my TD4 (cause the wife said the old one smelt of dead dog) and now stand no chance of getting rid of it and covering my costs.

How's this for an idea?

in Kendle all the pubs have barred Alister Darling after the tax rise in beer

SO why dont all petrol stations bar all MPs until they stop treating the motorist as a bottemless monney pit?

urge your garage today

once they introduce the stop/start technology -

Thought all LRs have had that since year dot...It starts you drive it...it stops you fix it:confused: .

They keep increasing the taxes for the motorist in a pretence that it will clean things up...My fookin arris

What do you think would happen if we did stop driving??? If just 10% of drivers decided to give up their motors the country would go bust...either that or they would hike the taxes the rest of us pay to keep the coffers flowing.

Think about it.:(
