For sale on Auto Trader. .......

2002(51 plate) 127,000 miles Metallic Blue, Great car Full Black leather heated seats Glass sunroof Roof-rails Alloys Full Service history Walnut trim and Steering wheel Mot August 2015, Alarm, Electric Windows, In Car Entertainment. SORRY NO OFFER!! This car is great value as it.., £2,000 p/x to clear

Worth it? Seems good value for money. My main question though is the ES model still decent enough off road? Also an adventurer model for sale however it's £2000 more then this one. I really like this but can't find out if it has HDC like the adventurer. Any idea?

Thanks Midge.

"px to clear" translates to "can't be bothered to fix it", even for this ridiculous asking price. I'd want a new MOT and a decent warrantee on it for that money.

IMHO, if you need HDC you need a different vehicle.

Redrex has a point if your going to do/have to do some serious off road stuff.

But it will have HDC the same as the adventurer am more than sure.

It looks shiny enough, needs a radio antenna, but looks straight enough. Why not go and see it, drive it, do the usual checks, and go from there?.

I would want a new service and some kind of warranty as well. Once again, as Redrex says, motor dealers seem to want to do bugger all to their stock nowadays. Cept maybe give it a valet.

Go and do some tyre kicking?.

I believe only the really early base models may not have come with HDC as standard. This one is mid range so I would imagine it has it (mine is a 2001MY GS and has it).

Looking at the description and pictures id say it's worth a closer look. TD4, leather, nice wheels and a strong colour. All good things on the surface.

Being what it is I imagine it's had mostly motorway miles, or parked "off road" on a school run. This is good from an abuse point of view but definitely check the prop is present and the condition of the VCU - the kind of previous owner I'm describing wouldn't necessarily have an interest in the finer points of ownership and these may need attention. All matching tyres too.

Oh and check all of the warning lights on the dash, it's common to have them removed to hide a fault which is a pain to replace.

Despite what the ad says, if anything like this is suspect either bid them down or walk away.

Most 2nd hand car dealers sell cars their previous owners wanted to get rid of, ex lease, ex hire, auctions or px.
The chances of getting a decent one at a decent price means I have never bought a 2nd hand car from a dealer or someone pretending to be a private seller. I certainly wouldn't buy unseen or driven
Having said that, no car can be guaranteed and if you can get a warranty from them (not the other sort) then you pays your money, you take your chances.

Thanks for help guys. Will definitely do the usual checks and tyre kicking business etc. Just wanted to get some initial thoughts as it's 33 mlies away. Not too far but far enough :) Also comes will full service history so can check out what it has had to have done in past. Will check VCU, dash and everything else.

Thanks very much.

Coolant bottle looks old. I would change it and the cap. They discolour and go brittle with use/age.

noticed on some td4 that the engine covers are different

mines in two sections and must admit do like the cover that is shown here

Never noticed the wiper...may be worth a knock down winge (no offers or not) if it's bust!. I reckon if its still there Saturday mr trader will be getting a little worried, so there may still be a blagg to be had.

The extra £500 spondoolers will be there to pay for the lighting/showroom/vat man (ha Ha!) and a bottle of fizz for the missus on the way home.

I still say worth a sniff with a metal toed boot

We gotta put faith in our man Midge :)

Thanks Bolt will definitely be having a good old check around it!

How can I check the vcu whilst there though? I've read the thread on how to check it but that's more of a home based check. I want to know if there is a way to check 4WD whilst I'm visiting.

Never mind it has been sold :(

Thats a bugga!...never mind, plenty more Hippo's in the river.

For the next one you come across VCU wise just stick it in reverse on full lock and check if it really struggles to move after a while. If it struggles slightly, i would say its ok. Lots of debate over this, so that is just a general guide.

Good luck on your quest.

funny enough that's how I tested my vcu when I bought the hippo

I put it on full lock but then just took it slightly off the full lock a smidge

done it like a figure of eight in reverse , to see if it was like the brakes were on

as the seller I don't think would be keen if u started jacking it up and doing the wheel up test

the guy had a landy there with a faulty vcu and got me to reverse that and u can tell the difference , feels like the brakes are being held on and not smooth in reverse as it should be ,can feel like a vibrating judder if that makes sense

Cool will remember that for next time thanks very much guys really is appriciated :tea:

Back to Landy hunting now!
