late 2003/2004 as you mentioned was the facelift year. Lots of upgrades on the 1.8. New dash, better lights, revised suspension options etc. Not 100% sure of all the TD4 engine upgrades, but am sure someone else can fill you in.

The facelift can IMHO be said to be a better vehicle, but not mind blowingly better.

As mentioned already. I wouldn't go there with the V6. Horrendous fuel consumption for not a lot extra power. There is a guy who got one for peanuts on here...and thats all well and good. But it wouldn't be on my list of must have hippos.

Thanks. So the younger models that ate selling for £2k more then the older models, but done same or more milage are simply dearer because of age?

ill try posting later or tomorrow the two examples I have found.

Yea, thats more or less it. Its age related. The facelift is a better looking car as well. So it all adds a little to the price.

I think its safe to say that if you can swing to a later model then go for it. But i wouldnt say its an absolute must have, especially in a turbo diesel form. The 1.8 would be another matter because of the worthwhile engine mods.

Yes newer models are better looking but not £2000 worth better!

The examples I was talking about are below.

Black x reg = 71k miles at £2000
Blue 53 reg = 120k miles at £3500

Looks clearly changed but spec looks pretty much same, that's why was wondering if something had changed engine/performance wise from a certain year Onwards?

Thinking about it engine wise, and if we are talking about the TD4 model (M47R), there was little difference in the years. I seem to remember the later units from about 2002 had more stuff on them to control temperature, and were actually heavier with no significant power gain and slightly poorer fuel consumption. Once again, am no TD4 specialist.

2 grands a bit pricy daughters cost 1500 quid 2003 td4 90000 full service history full leather 2 owners and there were plenty more like it dotted round the country
120000 + and your coming up to injector problems for a start
forgot to add full set of winter tyres on 15in rims included

Whatever you pay for it be prepared to spend more sorting all the issues you spotted plus a few you missed on the test drive. At the mileage your looking at, assume the VCU is stuffed unless receipts to prove otherwise.
If your on a budget (like me) and a bit stupid (like me) and like working on engines (like me) and have a spare lucky rabbits foot (unlike me) the 1.8 petrol ones are much cheaper, I bought an 04 face lifted with 104,000 miles one and 12 months MOT for £1450 but since buying it have fixed the following issues.
VCU was seized so drive shaft off, rear door lock mechanism faulty, head gasket failed after 500 miles, wiper motor iffy
Still to fix dodgy clutch and replace the VCU but so far have spent almost £500 on parts.
The L series is a bit slow but supposedly easy to improve
TD4 goes much better and is the one to go for but the price reflects that.

Whatever you get have fun.

Decided I'm going to post all my freelander questions in here from now on. Seen as 99 % of my posts are questions will just keep posting in here instead of loads of new threads.

So latest question is(bear with me)............

From what year onwards did freelanders spec improve?
For example, from 2004 they changed Y component to X component which improved MPG. Or in 2001 bodywork was altered to improve off road handling, such things as that?

Or have they not done anything and it's based on model (GS, ES, HSE) and im just been stupid?

Cheers
Mechanically/electrically... a lot of changes/improvements were done on the 2001 onwards model year. This started late 2000.

Several spec brochures in ere:

Thanks for all the help again guys much appreciated :tea:

Think I'd be happy with the X reg with lower mileage then make a few basic mods to it so it's more suitable for green laning.

I'm not sure but aren't the facelift ones dearer to tax? Taking like for like so prefacelift TD4 against facelift TD4?

Mines a 2001 TD4 and I seem to remember something about it being the sweet spot for better components and less tax only in the older looking front end. Less reliant on K bus or can bus or whatever, (slightly) more conventional electrics, but no OBDII compliance as a trade off.
