only 2 wheel drive.

I was out yesterday at the flying field which is very wet and muddy,
and i suspect that it is only 2 wheel drive, the front wheels were spinning.
is it possible that the vc could be seized in open circuit and that there is only
drive the front wheels. all the prop shafts and vc are all there, and what is problem.

Never seen a vcu fail like this, apart from badly "recon" ones. You need to see if front part of prop is spinning, if so dodgy vcu, if not then its the ird unit.

Would like to have seen the unit, just can't see how its possible

I can only imagine that the fluid breaks down such that it looses its "thickening" properties completely.

I do have a noise from the IRD area or prop bearings, but will have a look at the front
prop shaft. if i could get the car on a lift and see if all four wheel drive.

Jack front wheels off the ground and let clutch out very slowly, see if you have any drive, obviously don't let clutch out if you feel the car starting to move . Or just jack one rear wheel up and try to turn it, if it turns freely, look if front prop is rotating, if it is them its ird

Could be one of those drilled VCU's?

The vcu could have sustained damage and drained it's fluid

It's broken! Blown ird, stripped splines, bodged vcu, grenaded rear diff! At a guess need to figure out what spins and what doesn't to locate which is the cause!

Sounds expensive, will have a look as soon as and see what is spinning and what is not.
stripped splines i have read some where on here about that, even so the hippo is worth
fixing has she is going well with a great engine , if i keep in 2 wheel drive or am i doing
more damage by driving it.

That depends on what's failed! Normally no. At a guess the damage has already been done and you've probably been driving it for ages without realising!

Wot he sed ^^^^^^^. First thing is to identify what is the problem.

If it isn't making 'orrible noises then I doubt you're hurting it - Hippo's tend to tell you when they are smarting.

Try the one wheel up test - it won't tell you exactly how healthy your VCU is but it will tell you whether it is utterly fooked or not.

I will check it out at the weekend, has i tried fixing the rear passenger door today, but that now needs a new lock. run out of time.

Up date on the 4 wheel or in my case, 2 wheel drive.
i was of work today and decided to look under the car and i jacked up the drivers side
rear wheel. the rear wheel turned freely and i looked at the drive shafts and the vcu up
to the IRD turned together. so does that mean the IRD is f==ked as i do have a grouling
noise from that area, so the car is in 2 wheel drive. if the vcu and all the rear and front props are going round together with no resistants at all, is the bearings and the guts of the IRD in sh=te. it also could be the splines and i would have to remove the front prop
and rule that out first before i would be looking for a recon IRD when funds become available. what do you guys think.

Thanks nogde, so i would need to remove the drive going into the gearbox and
also remove the front prop to inspect the splines.
that can be done with the gearbox and the IRD in place i hope.
the car is driving great in all gears and in 2 wheel drive, i think i would be doing
no harm in driving still.:boom:

If the gearbox spline is stripped you end up with a rear wheel drive Freelander as the drive to the front just spins in the spline. The drive to the rear goes through the VCU to the rear diff.
