I have searched for this and nothing seems to come up, and want to get it sorted while the FL is still under warranty.

I was just crawling about underneath as I had dropped the washer filler cap into the engine bay and noticed that there is a lot of oil all over the transmission tunnel, seems to be where the prop shaft joins the cylindrical thing at the front.

There is a plastic washer thing that doesn't seem to be in properly.

Any ideas what is going wrong so we can take it back to the garage?

Sorry about the pics

Oh, and its a 2006 TD4.

Looks more like grease to me. Isn't there a Universal Joint there. If its under warranty give it them back and tell em to sort it.
Mike

TBH I don't know much about FLs. It would make sense there being a UJ there.

The problem is the garage is 1 hour 20 from us, so I want to know that it is drivable, and if it is something small like a UJ gaiter or something we will just take it to somewhere local as it would cost more to get it back to Sheffield.

If you look in the freelander forum, how to. Hippo has done a thread about vcu bearing replacement. There's some photos in there with that bit in it and a good description of it.
Might give you an idea.
Although I'd personally ring the garage and describe it to them. Don't think driving it will harm it as you would hear the part grinding/ clicking if it was on its way out.
Mike

Thanks.

Does it matter that it seems to look different than the one in the pics?

Is it just a cheap fix then? Probably not worth taking it back to Sheffield then.

hi

this is whats inside, had to replace mine when it started to vibrate at 50 mph ,

land rover told me i had to replace the entire prop which wasn't true as i was able to just get the broken part replaced

plus here's the great link that hippo done

Well I don't think that the bearings are going, there is no noise, and no play in the prop. I hope not anyway!

hi thats what the main dealer also told me that u cant get just the front sorted out

yes got a complete new front cv joint, a local garage in bexley health , kent got it, will dig out the invoice for u to get the name etc

pretty sure it was around 100 to supply and fit it for me and included the removal and refitting of the complete prop, they also made sure the prop was balanced and not damaged so when it went back on the car it was all done correctly

was heaven when the vibration went

leave it with me and will dig out the details for u

The gaiter has split. It basically does the same job as the gaiter on the drive shafts. It's there to keep the grease in and muck out of the tripod joint. The gaiter is available as a replacement part.
There was another post on here in the last couple of weeks about the same thing. It's not a difficult job to complete. The gaiter isn't expensive either.

Thanks.

I am trying to get my 90 back together before winter so I am a bit pressed for time, so will prob take it to a local garage if it is only a small job. Plus the last gaiter I put on a CV joint lasted about a week...

Just ordered all of the parts to do it myself as we don't have time to get to Sheffield. Wish me luck!

Also, what type of grease do I put in it?

CV joint grease or a high Molybdenum grease.

Be careful not to take the bearing cups off and mark the orientation with tipex before removing the tripod from the housing.
Good luck.
