****ed again...

If pointing downhill with.the engine tepid and tge foot brake on, mine goes from normal idle to stutter and back every ten seconds ish.

I reckon its vacuum related: if it was the old v8 disco it would have been the vac.
Check the seal onto the tps/iacv whichever, I sealed the vac pipe and it made some diffetence.

thanks for suggestions but have cleaned and sealed both the idle air control and throttle position, have checked fuel pump and filter, beginning to think its either temp coolant sensor or crank sensor, would either of these act like this if they were on the way out???

replaced both coolant temp sensor and crank sensor both were dirty and looked worn anyway doing a test drive later on will update if problem has been solved if not look for the thick black smoke and flames over weymouth :(

thats cuz it broke down on the way to the petrol station to buy the fuel to burn it!!!! :( bloody thing is destroying my will to live now.. i have replaced cooland temp sensor, crank sensor cleaned and checked both tps and iacv it didnt cut out for ages then just dropped revs i had to pull over it didnt cut out but wouldnt rev for a few seconds then power returned and i drove about hundred yards and did same again then hundred yards again did same then was ok for 2 to 3 hundred yards to home, really confused now any ideas???

Sounds like the crank sensor is breaking down when hot. So I would change the sensor and go from there. You have tried just about everything else!

i have changed the crank sensor!! is there anyway of testing these?? the one i took out was very dirty, what else can this be its driving me round the bend????????

Oh sorry dint see that you had changed it....... Was it a new one?

Just leaves the coil breaking down when hot I think........ My brain ain't in the right place for indepth diagnosis atm though

What year is ya hippo? Early seperate coil and dissy or later coil packs?

it was a second hand part but from a working engine, its a 1998 so has a dizzy, that is brand new so is the rotor arm and ht leads!! how do i test the crank sensor? would a air lock in the cooling system cause my problems? thanks for all replies

Air lock wouldn't cause the problem.

The coil needs looking at. Can you swap the coil over from the other engine? Or a cheap new one is about £20.

i have a spare but this one is brand new :( i have yet not been able to get to the root cause of my problem, there is no clear data or explanation of what is causing this fecking thing to randomly loose power every 20/30 miles then start back up as if nothing happened only to do it again 20 miles more????? could this be fuel related? ie fuel pump/filter blockage or faulty pump???? my will to endure this is dwindling fast :(

well ill give it a go anyway lol why not, i have put more man hours into this thing than any motor i have owned in ten years!! ive got it booked in with a mate with top notch gizmos to poke and probe this bloody thing that may give me some idea what to do next. thank you for all help advice

Does the fuel tank have a seperate vent or is it through the fuel cap ?
Years ago escorts (and other cars) used to have your symptoms because the vent in the fuel cap blocked and caused a vacuum in the tank. (You could hear a sucking noise as you removed the cap).
Its not likely to be your problem, but as you've tried most other things and clutching at straws , it might be worth checking it out.

Sorry its taken ages to put this puppy to bed but its been a bloody long few days off work:rolleyes: Freelander all woking now:D . It was the fuel pump relay for anyone who might have same problems unsure how long for but thats the joys of ownership i guess:( thank you all for the helpful remarks suggestions. its been emotional people :crazy_driver:till the next time then..keep rovering:rolleyes:

Glad it's sorted now and good that you followed it up. Sometimes it's the simplest things that get overlooked
