Hey guys,

I've been having some issues with my 2006 td4 that's on 49k miles. A week or two ago the car wouldn't start at all and i kept getting the check engine error with the exclamation mark, a mechanic came over and got the low fuel pressure error. We immediately thought it's the fuel pump, he checked a few sensors at the engine(it's my first car and i'm not a mechanic) disconnected some of them to test and plugged them back in, eventually he checked the pump under the rear seats and verified the wiring, all seemed okay. Car randomly comes back to life and has been fine ever since( a week or two).

Now the problems start, when the engine warms up the baby barely goes to 2000-2500 rpm and is very sluggish/slow at that RPM. I have tested the car to 70-75 MPH this morning when it was still fairly cold and there was no power loss; 5 mins after driving to work it started pulling back over 2200 RPM. Could it be the MAF sensor or the fuel pump?

Would really appreciate some help on this and i apologise for making this thread when i know there are countless others but i want to make sure because in Romania the parts are very expensive as is the labour and i wouldn't want to change the pump when it could be something else

Sounds Like it could be the low pressure fuel pump.

Even though the car hasn't done very many miles, it is 8 years old now. The fuel pump does do weird things when it is on its way out. Hitting a 'wall' at 2500 or so revs is one of them. The EML light comes on when that happens. Check the filter as well. It should be replace every 12,000 miles or yearly.

Only fit an OEM quality pump. Expect to pay £120-£170 for the part. It's fiddly but easy to fit and takes about an hour. The cheap pumps are noisy and don't la very long.

Thank you for the reply! The light hasn't come on since then, even if i rev it over 3000 rpm when it's cold. So it could actually be the low pressure pump ey? I change the fuel filter every 6200 miles so i don't know if that could be the problem, also only ever use quality diesel.

Also, can i change only the low pressure fuel pump or is that inside the original fuel pump and it needs to be replaced altogether?

Nevermind, EML came on at 2500 revs. Just so i can make sure i get the right piece can someone PM me a link to the part or post it here please?

I change the fuel filter every 6200 miles

Needs to be changed every 6178.994 miles.

only ever use quality diesel.

TBH - I think in the threads on here comparing 'regular' against 'quality' diesel there's little in it and some prefer regular to quality stuff. They're mainly Brits discussing that though, suppose quality may be relative in different countries.

I understood only specialists can fix that

I don't have a TD4 - but plenty of people on LZ with TD4s replace it themselves easily - its not a complex HP pump that does timing etc. More like an ornamental pond pump - just not as reliable.

Update: Car's been acting perfectly fine and is no longer losing power over 2200 revs even when the engine is warm. Could it be because of the filter being clogged? Or are these still common symptoms of a pump on it's way out? Dying and coming back to life again?

Thanks in advance

Yep.

Mine played up on one occasion-it wouldn't rev over 2500-3000rpm, the EML light came on and I thought it would stall if let to idle.

It then cleared for about 3 months before causing problems again. The sound changed from the rear pump, the EML light came on at decreasing speeds. It ended coming on at under 50mph in top gear. It was time to change.
That was March this year at about 121,000 miles. Now at almost 131,000 miles and it has been purrrrrrrfect since :D

Cool, can i ask where did you buy yours from? :)

Update for those interested and who experience similar issues in the future:

I figured the car was too young in mileage for it to have issues with the pump so i took a swing at the filter as Epicuser suggested first.(Apparently the guy that changed dad's fitted the filter incorrectly if that is possible?)

I purchased this car from my father, he barely drove it hence the low mileage so he sold it to me.

Runs like brand new, no issues, no EML light over 1800 RPM.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this thread, this car means a lot to me and i will always go out of my way to make sure baby is healthy!

It's a pleasure.

It could possibly be put on the wrong way round.
