Hi all, today I picked up a new key for my FL1 from my local LR dealer, they of course checked my reg. and took a copy of my log book and driving licence for ordering purposes however although the new key is a perfect copy of the key itself it won't start the car, I'm assuming there is a problem with the new chip, have any of you come across this before? I would have thought that unless the system has been re programmed at some point that the chip would as per the key be a perfect copy:scratching_chin:

Got a new key for mine about two months ago, same as yourself from genuine local LR dealer. Still had to run down to the local locksmith boffin to have it programmed to the vehicle! LR dealer wanted about another £80 on top of the price of the key to program it in. Local locksmith plugged in the magic machine and had it done in five minutes for £20 !!!

I just ordered a plain unlock/lock single key from ebay, took it to the smith. To get fitted. And transfered the chip from my old lock to the new one. Only cost me $20 US dollars.

Ah that sort of explains it then, I'd better try to find someone local to Guildford to do the programming :-(

Surprising that the dealer didn't mention it when you got the new key

Agreed. The cost of the key alone should cover programming it to the vehicle and should also include a full service, a full valet, a courtesy car, and a fish and chip supper.

You asked for a replacement key. What they have sold you is not fit for purpose as it will not start your car - a keys primary function!
They cant sell you a key and then once it arrives (custom order - no refunds, remember) THEN tell you, "oh, by the way it needs another £80 of labour to make it work".

If I went into Currys and bought a telly for £150 and once I got it, then found it wouldnt work without another £80 decoder to receive a signal, I would be straight on to the management and if no joy I would be getting legal advice from CAB.

land rover seem to be very good at this

like for example u buy a towbar then landrover turn round and say do u want bolts with that, lol

agree with the other guys, they should have said it doesn't include programming the key and not fit for purpose

A potential result on the cards, after emailing to complain they've apologised and agreed to programme the key in their workshop free of charge at a time of my choosing, so she's going in tomorrow morning to hopefully get sorted, I will report back then, but if all goes to plan then a big thumbs up to Hunters of Guildford for being honourable in the end.

good news, ive personally got a great customer service from them

they found a cruise control switch for me as there are two types and found them very helpful

hope it all gets sorted for u

Key issue all sorted thanks to Hunters, had to laugh though when I arrived the (extremely attractive) young lady at the service desk was all professional and yes sir no sir but when she asked me which method of payment I'd be using and I said none as it was a free job via the parts department she looked less than impressed but after I insisted she spoke to the manager all was sorted and she got her smile back, no problem whatsoever to get the key programmed but after asking if they could diagnose why the remote key fob didn't work I thought I'd scored a right result when they informed me that the fob itself was kaput and they could do me a new one there and then for £55, another hour later they reappeared to say the fob just wouldn't programme to the car and that expensive investigative work was needed via another workshop booking.....er.....no I think I'll do without it thanks!
All in all I was impressed with Hunters customer relations and hospitality, to be honest I'd expect nothing less from them but fair play they've rectified the key issue at no extra cost to me so all in all I'm happy :)

You can't really blame them for trying to "upsell" you, on a freebie visit. It's their bread and butter (more butter).

Hmm yes full-fat butter! Lol, looking around their showroom with the Evoques RR Sports and Discos they can afford to help out a poor old FL1 owner!

Funny you mention Evoque. First of all, wife and I are not poor, and we can buy ANY car (or anything else) we want.

Her girlfriend just bought the Evoque, and they had a lunch together the other day, when her girlfrend asked her why she is driving an "old LR", and why she doesn't go and buy a new Evoque.

My wife said: "What? This one? Pointing to her girlfriend's new "pride and joy". "It's FUGLY! It looks like something heavy fell on it's roof, and it's squished." "I LOVE my Hippo, and I'm the only one in town that has one!". "And, ".....she added "my husband can take care of, and fix ANYTHING!"

Now how's that for a voice of confidence? :)

Lol, very true, and whether you are well off or like me broke! explains why there are so many older Landies around, easy to maintain, bags of character and fun to drive, as nice as the new models are they just don't have the charm of an old series Landie or early Disco

That's a fact. I was driving my 06 L322 yesterday, and next to me was a dark green (MINT condition) older Range Rover (not sure what year), and I thought it looks better than mine. Not condition wise (mine is mint too), but it had a STYLE!

The older I get, the more i lean toward old stuff. Antique furniture for example. Just bought 1906 piano last month,....GORGEOUS! Old people like old things, I guess.
