my first home TD4 service

Afternoon all

Okay have read lots of comments after doing a we hunt for advice on an oil change etc on an 2005 TD 4 Sport. It been years since I have done any work on my own car since having had a works run around van. Times change & I want to ask

so - to sum(p) up the process for oil changing for an other newbie

1- Sump guard off to expose plug or check if there is a previous hole been cut.
2- Drain oil & refit plug with new washer.
3- Old oil filter out & new one in. I used to fill up the new oil filter with oil before fitting on an old corsa, do I need to fill it on the TD4?
4- refill engine with new oil.
job done or is it ???

Questions I have,
1. I have been told about a crankcase breather filter? needs doing every oil change?
2. The Air filter at the back, just unclip hoses, remover & swap with new.
3. When I did my old corsa I found t best to have the car facing up the ramp cos the oil sump had better flow towards the back of the car. What's best thought for the freelander? Time will tell I suppose when I get under to see for myself

Procedure wise, that's an oil change in a nutshell. The oil filter is the paper cartridge type (looks like a small, cylindrical air filter) and I never fill the housing with oil first. You need a biggish socket to undo the housing. 35mm, possibly. Can't remember off the top of my head. Use the new O rings that come with the new oil filter.

I usually put the front end of mine on ramps to do an oil change. It's easier to remove the underbelly pan like that. I guess it aids oil flow too as the sump plug is on the back of the sump.

The air filter is held on with 5 Allen key bolts. The front three are easy to get to, the back two less so. I've actually got the long shaft of a 5mm Allen key cut off and glued into a spare 5mm socket. This plus a small extension bar plus 1/4" ratchet makes getting the two bolts on or off a lot easier. You will need to undo the hoses that go into the housing to get it off.

The crankcase breather is a service item, supposedly every 20K or so I think. Doesn't mention that in the Haynes manual tho. Do what most others do - replace it for the plastic BMW fit once and forget part. There are numerous threads on here about this.

^^^ what he said, but it might be 36mm. I can't remember. The one I used was too big, but it did the job. Doesn't have to be tight.

Recommend a genuine oil filter though. Cheap enough from LR.

Be prepared for the amount of oil you'll get out-From memory the sump holds just under 7 litres, I had to do mine in two hits.

not possible to pre-fill the oil filter on the Td4 as it is mounted open end down

Check oil levels in IRD, diff, and gearbox.
Drain fuel sedmenter/water trap.
Check brake pads and shoes.
Change pollen filter.

I for one, can really recommend the purchace of a Manual on the car, that with time will save you money.
And will have the relavent pic's on the problems you may come across in the time you own the vehicle.

Hi Thank you.
As I get to do the usual job I do when I buy a car I will be posting most if not all the jobs I do with detailed photo's hopefully they will help others, and it will be my contribution to the forum, as I hope to gain knowledge to from other more experienced members.

I Yesterday did a intake manifold change with the EGR, and fuel line union connectors from plastic to brass, and new hoses connected to the intercooler, I will be posting asap on a new thread cheers Arctic.

PS how does one become a senior member as opposed to a Junior member ? is down to posting, or do you have to subscribe.

Thank you that's cleared that up then, only asking because the R75 club/forum I have been with for the last 4 years or so, you can subscribe which costs £10.00 and you are then able to have extra PM messages, reach other parts of the club forum that a newbie or non subscriber can't, cheers Arctic2
