How about this - I was quoted £31 +vat EACH for the 6mm studs that hold the collar on the injectors of a TD4!!!!!! I asked for it to be checked and double checked but it came back as £31 + vat - does Landrover have connections with a certain Mr Turpin I ask or just s warped sense of humour.

So I am replacing mine with cheap and cheerful Stainless Steel at a few pence each - if anyone wants any as a special deal I will do them for £20 each no vat ha ha ha life is funny sometimes

Yes I reckon but let's just wait until I get the part I thought would be expensive but was cheap as chips first! It is bizarre though and the parts guy seemed quite un phased by it.

Stainless + aluminium dont mix.

I replaced the vast majority of the fasteners on my bikes with stainless 20+ years ago. I've never had any problems.

Hi, I just had a look on the online Microcat and there are two part numbers. One of them is says you need 8 of which has been superceded by another part number that says quantity is 1 (therefore meaning if you order one of the part number, you'll get 8 studs).

Part number for the x 1 quantity is LR009825. LR009825 STUD | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. R. Series

Excellent and thanks for the website link - very useful

Stainless steel hardware (rivets, bolts, screws) installed into an aluminum fitting creates a potential for dissimilar metals (galvanic) corrosion. Not really a good idea to put stainless bolts into an aluminium head.

Ok I understand this and will probably use the same rubbish steel Landrover chose in the first place - you do have to stop and think though exactly what would be to outcome of stainless and alloy - it's been routinely done on Motorbikes for many years with no ill effects - do using the standard studs means they will seize in just a few years then snap against stainless that may seize but probably not snap (?)

Whatever it is a very bad bit of design especially in view of the then need to do some major stripping down when( not if) they break!

At the moment, I'd say the fuel!!!

The worst cases of galvanic corrosion I've seen have been between mild steel and aluminium alloy, series door skins, floors, disco door cinches, A series bmc thermostat housing studs etc. I can assure you there is no trace of corrosion on the stainless fasteners or casings on my bikes, the original Italian fasteners were scrap after 4 5 years! A constant worry, would they come out when needed. No probs with my admittedly top quality correct grade stainless fasteners.

Ok bit of an update- my mechanic guy got all of the injectors out and camcover off - all studs removed and I have given him a new set from Landrover (£30 ish) all will be refitted over weekend so fingers crossed not silly huge bill - he is a good guy. Gareth, Autotune, Carmarthen

Yippee it's good to have an old school sensible mechanic at hand.

Strip out all 4 injectors and clean. Off with cam cover and remove all studs Inc 2 broken ones - reassemble and do a neat job. Also change a broken heater plug. Engine running do sweet now - no smoke on start up. £130 plus about £45 parts I supplied. Got to be good value - no stupid oh sir that's a head off job at £150 per hour plus parts from main dealer.

Yes the studs are a SET for £31 or you can get them from the site mentioned in one of the posts here for £14 plus vat plus post so not much cheaper in the long run.

Result all round - I am impressed by the TD4 - I put the BMW 320 filter on and the EGR bypass - well worth it - lots more power than my previous 2.0D
