hi all, eventually i have got around to changing my fuel pump on a 04 td4. i was just trying to squeeze the filter into the housing, got it stuck a couple of times pulled it back out. 3rd effort in i notice this metal 'clip' joining the filter and pump housings and im guessing they are an earth?

i dont know if ive mangle them when whacking the filter out or when trying to force the new one in but it looks mangled and im guessing it is supposed to look a bit more flush than the way it protrudes and bend over the interior of the housing. its an earth? what the hell is it supposed to look like and just how long and skinny do my fingers have to be to sort it?

thank the gods of crap design that these cars go crispy so quickly otherwise i wouldnt have been able to remove the straps holding the snow shield do to a badly positioned nut. thankfully undoing the front nut and then ripping the shield off the rusting rear strap seemed to solve the problem.

up for sale very soon if anyone is fool enough lol : )

The earth clip almost always corrodes and snaps, I had the same problem with mine, so I made one up until I got the replacement.

cheers artic, but its not the outer earth clip. inside the bores in which the filter and pump fit there is a bendy piece of metal that joins one bore to the other, presumably an earth from the pump earthing onto the filter or vice versa.
point is my one is mangled and i now dont know what it is supposed to look like when looking down the bore.

when i first noticed it i thought that there was a staple protruding from the surface of the filter bore but then noticed that there was another in the pump side too.

ill get a pic

sorry-no pics, got carried away and put it back together.

new pump and filter and cheap after markets as im selling it and im not going to see £300 back from the sale price which is going to be cheap already.

the new pump sounds like it is powered by wasps. buzzing all the time and is running constantly. im sure the pump that ive replaced cut out after 10 seconds or so. this one just seems to buzz on and on...??
