This follows on from a previous thread about high emissions problem on my 2002 freelander petrol, is the manifold cat the main catalytic converter, if this had gone would i be getting high co and hc readings.

I replaced the underfloor cat, is the second cat just there to catch anything the manifold cat didn't, is there anyway to test if the manifold cat is knackered.

Do i have to remove all the belts and alternator as two of the bolts are hidden behind what i think is the alternator that hold the manifold cat on, are there any tricks of the trade to get these two bolts out as i can get to the others ok, i'm thinking of having ago at replacing the manifold cat myself if it's doable with little knowledge.

I got the manifold cat off, didn't need to remove any belts, slackened the lower nut on the alternator then removed the upper nut and bolt the alternator moved forward so i could remove the bracket hiding one of the manifold bolts.

Ordered both the manifold cat and the rear under floor cat, lets hope this does the trick.

I think there is just one cat converter on the vehicle. My understanding is that on the 1.8 petrol FL1[ of which I have], the early models had a Cat converter just behind the IRD.This has a flexi joint right in front of it and the first muffler [ silencer] right behind it. They are bolted together with flanges and three bolts in each flange. The lambda sensor is located in the exhaust manifold.

Later models may have a different arrangement, the exhaust manifold included the cat converter. A canister like arrangement that each cylinder's pipe went into directly and just a single exhaust pipe exiting out the bottom. That was certainly the case for my '03 Rover 25 which has the 1.6 K16 motor. The V6 FL had this type on each of its manifolds.

not meaning to jump on the thread but I had my manifold changed a few weeks ago and it had the cat as the original cat had cracked....I was lead to believe that my 2002 k series only had one cat but iv just looked underneath and directly in front of the vcu is what looks like a cat...?
is this another cat or just one of three silencer box's

Earlier Freelanders that have a dizzy cap use a single cat in the exhaust, rearward of the flexible section.
Later Freelanders with DIS ignition has a pre-cat in the manifold and a main cat under the car in the same place as the early Freelander. The non NAS V6 has 3 cats, 1 in each manifold (it's a V remember) and a main cat rearward of the flexible section.
NAS V6 Freelanders have a large cat on each manifold, giving 2 in total.

Thats a new manifold cat and under body cat installed, i used silicone sealant as the sheet that came with the cats said don't use exhaust paste and drive for 8 miles then leave to cool.

What revs do they test the emissions at, i took it for drive then pulled over when it was nice and hot then started revs at 1000 then 2 and then 3 when it was upto 4500rpm i started to get some smoke.

one thing i noticed when driving at low speeds 10 to 20mph it sounds like the exhaust is been pulled along the ground once upto 30 and above cruising at a steady speed the noise stops, when i inspected the exhaust while stationary i can't see it touching anything, the noise isn't there when just ticking over, any ideas what's causing it.

I'm going to take it for another test tomorrow so fingers crossed.
