Well eventually got it to fit in the pipe with a lot of effort, works well so far.

Just a note for others who attempt it. put the pipe in boiling water first and use lots of silicon !!!

I had to do the same mod and found using a pipe with the correct diameter I was able to push it in fairly easily but also used a little smear of silicone grease to ease things. Temp sits rock steady at half way now. :)

The pipes on the auto transmission are smaller in diameter than the equivalent pipe in the manual version.
So fitting the stat into the auto pipe, takes more effort.

I Did one today for the R75 added the gates stat, this is to go with the spare FL 1 hose I had when I changed mine over,

Hi What way dose thermast go? Dose the gold bit face down words on the auto pipe facing towards top pipe???? Thanks Shaun

Hi Shaun,
Yes the brass part of the stat pints into the engine, as Nodge says it is a little tighter in the Auto hose opposed to the manual hose, but he did his fine, I am sure he can tell you more than me about the Auto fitting.

You will find it easier if you remove the hose from the car to fit the stat then refit the hose, few photo's below but these are of the manual hose.

Going to give it a try. But might wait as was quoted £100 for fitting thermostat but got to phone back Monday. But think it be loads more as it's 4hour plus job and part. He owns 4x4 shop
Says he do it in hour. Monday will tell. Thanks for help Shaun

Thanks will give it a try .Was quoted £100 for doing thermast properly but phone Monday said he do in hour. But it 4 plus hour job. He owns 4x4 shop and might no quicker way. Monday will tell. Unless it's £100 per hour lol

Has any one fitted to td4 auto freelander
Here's where it fits in the auto Freelander top hose (circled in red) The auto's top hose is quite a bit smaller then that manual's hose, but it does fit. I used plumbers silicone grease to help get the thermostat into the hose.
