Leak in my boot and can't find where its coming from

(Freelander 1 or 2 2004 TD4)

I seem to have developed a water leak in the lower part of my boot area where the spare tyre tools are held, in a locked compartment in the boot.

I cannot for the life of me see how the water is getting in there, it gets saturated, a small swimming pool .

I've looked all underneath vehicle for a missing grommit, but can't find anything missing and certainly can't see any holes. I'm certain it's not coming in through the back door and the main boot area in completely dry. I can't lift up the carpet in the back as it's all stictched in. Has anyone else suffered with this problem and may know how to fix it?

I've filled the area up with silicon gel sachets but this really isnt a good solution lol

Join the party. There are quite a lot of us on the forum with the same problem. I have got my carpet out drying at the moment and I'm 99% sure the water is coming in through the back door seal. I have moved the catch receiver in about 3mm to try and get a better fit/seal, but since doing it it has not rained to test it out.

More ofter that not you will find it's the door seal that is the problem. You could try cleaning the seal with silicon spray and also clean around the door where the seal meets.

I'm pretty sure I saw a video of a guy spraying water under the car and it was ingressing through the diabolically bad weld between the chassis and the boot cubby tub. Something like that.

For fook sake don't use bathroom sealant. Use proper mechanic's grade black saelant or get it welded properly.

as mentioned .. there be a host of ppl. with same problem ..
and an equal number of possible 'try this' solutions

try a forum search .. there's probably a zillion threads on the pesky damp problem

Well bu@@er me, thats the first time I've seen that. I've still got a leeky seal though because the car was outside the house the other night with frost all over it, when the frost had melted there was a puddle on the floor.

Yeh it's spot welded in place, possibly in the top 20 best examples of LR Muppetry on the Hippo with my other personal favourite the tailgate locking unit which is built to exacting standards of ****e.

PM any of the tratter owners who live near you. I'm sure someone will be able to spare ten minutes between patching up their chassis'.

If you are certain that the door-seal is ok then check out the plastic inserts that the cubby-box lid hinges screw into. A dealer bulletin has highlighted that the neoprene seals that these sit against can fail allowing water to work its way in from the underside.
My wife's TD4 had this problem and rather than just replacing the neoprene seals I decided to clean up the square holes where the nylon nuts sit and silicon them in. Many months have now passed and dampness in the boot is a thing of the past.

i just bought the wife a 99 freelander last week and it came with a factory fitted fish bowl, after sitting in the boot for over an houre with the hose running over the roof i cudnt find any leaks even thru the lift off roof seals. but Litch might be onto something.

Looks to me like they were either good from new or they weren't . Mine seems to be ok but I might run some black sealant round it just to be sure.

That huge sponge in the back is part of the problem (no not the kids). Throw the bleddy thing away!!

Have had same problem seems to be condensation from locked lid have left open for a while and now seems to have dried out will see later in week as now heavy rain again, but there was a lot of water on lid when opened and no obvious leaks
