I've had this problem, or similar, for about 3 - 4 weeks, usually occurred when the engine was warm. Noticed quite a few threads reporting similar, but never a cure was quoted!!
However, recently it was doing it cold. Symptoms were revving to 3K, when cruising steady at less than 2K it would seem to mis-fire and the engine management light came on, just for half a second. Also the tickover was abot 1.2 k when it was mis-behaving.
Has a rumage around the engine bay today whilst the fault was present. I moved some connectors and the fault was gone!! It appears, on my freebie, that facing into the engine bay at the RHS behind the engin management lump there are 3 multi connectors. The middle one wasn't attached via a metal lug like the bottom and top one. Further investigation see's that the connector pins/connection protrude slightly out of the connector!!! (not the best design) and were apparently intermittantly earthing via the mounting lug. Anyway, I've remounted the connector, secured it with a cable tie, done a good half hour run, (fault usually appeared well within that timescale) and running fine and dandy.
So, if you have this falt, just check that the middle connector is secure and not earthing via the mounting lug.
Happy for once, till the next thing to break, breaks.
