Any advice on my L-Series Glow Plug relay mystery would be appreciated ...

In order to try and cure a cold start problem on my XDI I purchased a new glow plug relay (part YWB100560L) from the local Land Rover dealership. According to the Haynes manual the relay should be a yellow one and is the middle of three under the engine compartment fusebox. However, the new relay was black, smaller and matched the one nearest the offside wing (actually it would only fit this socket as the the spade connectors are larger). No real improvement in cold starting so I assumed the relay was not the problem.

However, I wasn't happy with the ambiguity so I removed the yellow middle relay and switched on the ignition and lo.. no glow plug light on dashboard so I assume this IS the glow plug relay. However it's a yellow one (YWB10012) and according to (google search) this part number is only 40amp and I thought they had to be 70amp?

So what's the answer? - assuming the middle yellow relay is the glow plug, why does the part number not match and why is it only 40amp? Is there another yellow relay which is 70amp and the existing one is not correct?

I have TD4, when its running (Thats a big When!) i can remove fuel pump
relay and the car still runs????


My brother has the same vehicle, and he has'nt got a fuel pump relay
at all??
His car runs perfect!!

I think the wiring on these vehicles are shite!!

Just a thought have you replaced the glow plugs

Glow plugs have ben changed with no noticeable effect.

The car wont start first time in the morning, if I switch the ignition on and off 2-3 times (waiting for glow plug light to go out each time) it will start so does this point to the relay?

If the wrong relay is installed and it's only 40amp would this lower ampage mean the plugs arent heating up to the right temperature?

If the relay amperage wasn't right, then the relay would eventually burn out. I don't know the L-Series, but on my old peugeot 205 diesel, the relay box was reasonably large & incorporated a lot of electronic timing gubbins along with a very heavy duty relay. I'm sure the current draw was nearer the 70 amps you mention. To get me going I fitted a heavy duty toggle switch with some very heavy duty mains earth cable from my local hardware store & a small yellow LED & installed this as a manual bypass. Switch on toggle switch for 6 or so seconds, start engine & then switch off toggle once engine was running. Worked every time.

get a new 40a and fit it see if it impoves ,dicect old wun and see if contacts are burned. . . . .and yes they should pull about 70amps, makes yer wonder if they wired it to the wrong back socket. . . . .
