happy xmas all the brides 98 l series oil burner is being a pig to fire up it's throwing out plenty of smoke when cranking so fuel not an issue, changed glow plugs yesterday no improvement .it does start after being cranked over for quite a while anyone any ideas I've done a search not really helped much..cheers

is this problem every time or just when cold
all the time the car cut out on the Mrs at a set of lights and fired up fine then the next morning a pain to start going to check fuel supply in the morning even though it's belting out smoke when cranking just to make certain..

right this is now driving me nuts so far I have checked for power to heater plugs and with a test lamp and there is power and the relay works fine....there is fuel lots of smoke while cranking engine.....air filter was manky so removed it no change....so I have made up a device today to test heater plug operation the plugs are new but that doesn't mean they work so I shall report back.....:violent: god I hate this car..

what plugs did you fit

is there any chance the fuel pump belt has slipped a tooth or 2 which means ya getting fuel just not at the right time

belt won't have slipped Matt plugs were from gsf don't know the brand but when it stops blowing 100 mph outside I'm going to test them :D

That sounds to me as though it starts OK/better when warm/hot and also has idling issues.

god I hate this car..

I jest about my L Series Freelander, but the reason you can't find much help is probably because the L Series is a bloody good engine.

If its got idling issues then its not glowplugs, they're only on at start up. So you're looking at fuel/air flow. Changing the air filter was a good start, it does make a big difference, mine stopped smoking after changing the air filter - although I've never had problems starting. So I've never had to diagnose starting issues.

You mention smoke, does it smoke much when driving? If it was a fuel timing issue, I'd have though you would be getting smoke all the time. On the 2 1/4 Series engine white smoke is a sign of poor timing on the fuel pump.

no smoke while running and no idle issues I have taken the air filter out as it was manky and will be fitting a new one Monday.it's without a doubt heater plug related as it will start after a good cranking so I will be spending plenty of time investigating on Monday...

my l series was a dick to start so naturally i changed the battery and it still wouldnt start properly, like it had a flat battery but clearly didnt. it was the starter in the end. fires up quicker than anything ive ever owned before now :) no matter how cold it is.

Starters get tired after a long period of time. My dads beamer had the same problem.

Hope this helps :)
