I found this on the web about Rover 800:

THERMOSTAT - 2.5 Kv6
-------------------------------
- nominal rating - 82deg C
- starts to open - 78 deg C
- fully open at - 86deg C

Is it saying that thermostat used in Rover has lower temp setting than Freelander?

Here is the link if anyone want to have a look 800 FAQs

having a lower thermostat is only masking the problem.

the fix requires.....
a) a better coolant flow around the cooling system to reduce localised hotspots.
b) more control over the coolant. ie greater cooling where required.

... a lot of info on that link, didnt read all of it.

What temp is the stat at in the V6 Hippo?

The stats for the k-series are all 88 oC, regardless of what car they are in. Although when I checked the stat last year after hgf, it didnt start to open until 95 oC

It meant that warm up times were very quick, about 2-3mins

aint that gonna compound the thermal shock when the stat duz open?

Yes you are quite right MHM..... It was cylinder one (beside the stat) showing low compression/hgf.

Opened up the head and there was a split in the elastomeric compound on clyinder one, not to mention white encrusted residue on the valves (coolant ingress).

All because of a dodgey stat on the inlet, never had any probs with overheating and engine ran at normal temp.

At least the engine doesnt go to the stage where it is way too hot and the cooling system cant cool it down (eg: KV6)

I cant remember exactly but i think it starts to open at 88 oC and fully open around 95 oC.

No, the housing i different to KV6. MHM posted the pic of the KV6 thermostat a while ago

that aint as easy as it sounds either - is it?

Its not as bad as I thought it would be for the 1.8, dunno about the KV6, once timing marks have been set and timing belt removed its straight forward. Removing rocker cover and cam carrier are just tiresome/repetitive. Although head bolts can be removed without removing cams, you just rotate each cam in turn to gain access to the head bolt (cam lobes obstruct the head bolts).

Ok thanks, could vaguely remember the stat housing pic from MHM,, I know it was a sealed unit which prevented modifying/driling the stat ring.

Im still tempted to crack open the stat housing of the KV6 and re-seal with HT silicone..... just need to find a KV6 with redundant stat housing

eerya

Great pics, I see they dropped the whole subframe with gearbox and all to get the lump out.

Its a shame it was a bit of a lemon, looking at the block and its faces it looks identical to the 1.8 and it narrow restrictive coolant passages through the head.

I tell you what the cylinders need a good de-coke. Mr Muscle oven cleaner works a treat but never let it dry out on aluminium.

On the spam note/tangent, it was a lead from Willos thread, where he is the only other person apart from Ron Denis to have an immaculate tiled floor (according to Slob)
