Replaced the clutch a couple of thousand miles ago (even though it had just a new one but some of the clutch had fallen off and jammed in the pressure plate causing not enough movement being available), but just recently there is a horrible knocking noise/rattling from the gearbox when out/in gear. If i depress the clutch the noise stops. The odd thing is if i let the clutch out gently the noise doesn;t happed, even if reved/friven, but if i let go of the clutch quickily the noise never stops until i let the clutch out slowly!!

bastard freelanders

Was the flywheel bearing ok, might be the reason you're busting clutches, it holds the spiggot shaft central, if it's fooked then the rattle and busted plates.

not sure what exactly came out, but there was a part of a ring/disc, that looked like it could have come out from the clutch plate, this bit dropped into and got wedged in one of the pressure plate fingers, which stopped the clutch fully disengaging. Something else, i get clutch judder as i pull away, its done it before i changed the clutch

Sounds like one of the springs, or a bit of it from the friction disc, the damper springs that try to stop that judder you are getting. Judder can be caused by oil contamination, or a bad flywheel. Was it clean or was it burnt and horrible. Don't know if it's fitted wif one of them fancy flywheeels that fook up is it.

You do this yerselv. twice?

bought the car for £1200 (2000 x reg 5 door 70k miles) with "new" clutch fitted (no receipt so may have been 1000's of miles ago), it had a fooked IRD unit and powersteering pump, repaired that (We sell IRD units and VCU's) and decided to keep it for myself as it was LPG, but 2 days after getting it on the road clutch went. Changed it myself, flywheel looked fine, no oil contamination, and the clutch looked brand new. You saying the flywheel shaft bearing does sound likely though, as there is a horrible "dry bearing" whine at 3250 rpm
