Just bought a modded Freelander TD4... seems to have no front PropShaft!

that's very odd indeed that is.
Its not been off for long, no rust where the CV bolts on.
Yep, my guess is that someone needed it for something and just unbolted the shaft.

Look in the FAQ section - All you need to know is in there.

Groovy, thanks. Will go through the FAQs!

Clonks and bangs from the IRD and diff and signs of the vcu being seized! Do a search on testing them there's loads of good info on it. Or get it to bell engineering they seem very well respected from what I hear. The vcu can do a lot of damage so it's important to have one in good working order

Cheers, that's good advice. Bell engineering are a bit of a trek from here, so I might try and find someone a bit more local to Southampton.

At the moment, there's a whining noise whenever the car is moving. It's not linked to the revs (i.e. doesn't happen at standstill), isn't linked to which gear I'm in, and isn't linked to braking. It's like a rumbling sort of noise, sounds like something rubbing.

I'm thinking it might be the VCU and rear propshaft making a noise as it freewheels in the dodgy shaft bearings, does that sound like a potential culprit?

Could still be the IRD or diff as they both rotate even with the prop and VCU removed.

That's what I was worried about - although the VCU is still in place - but as there is no propshaft connected, I think unlikely to be that?

Any suggestions as to how I check to see if it's likely to be the IRD?

Fooking hell, didnt ya get under it when ya was buying the bastard ?

Nope - as per my previous posts I bought it on a dark rainy evening at auction, and hadn't really checked it out.

It didn't cost me an excessive amount though, so I'm not moaning about the problems/quality/history, I'm just trying to gain advice on fixing things! :)

Aye, Ive bought a few sacks of **** meself over the years.. LOL !

I havent read the whole thread, good luck getting it sorted ;)

:hysterically_laughi

Thank you! I hope it's not quite a sack of ****... but we shall see!

No, i wasnt implying it was, I was just saying ive had some rotboxes in my time purely my own fault for not looking them over properly, or buying them blind via online auction and having them delivered.

I once bought a black car only to discover it was purple underneath.

A Disco 2 with a rotted chassis... to name a few. :)

Bit older and wiser now when it comes to buying a car.

Jack up the front wheels, get someone inside to start and run it in gear with you underneath listening under the IRD. I would always make sure before doing this that the front was properly supported and the wheels well clear of the ground also the rear wheels chocked and keeping clear of the output flange.

Awesome, cheers Nick. Will get the lads at work to help me with this later this afternoon!

Could be the VCU bearings, I'll bet the rear diff will turn the propshaft while the vehicle is moving.

What state are the tyres in? Quite a few reports on here of odd rumbling noises being cured by tyre changes.
