When warm there appears to be a rattle coming from the gearbox area when slowing down with very little or no throttle. I changed the oil back in March and since then have done a few thousand miles with the box behaving normally. I shall check the oil this weekend. I used the pukka oil, by the way. It seems to stop when under load, and just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same.

Before anyone says burn it, I'm fresh out of matches

Could it be something like the sump guard loose instead? If it is the auto, does it do it forwards and reverse?

Thank you for the replies, what led to think it was from the gearbox is that I get the noise when coasting and when you load it up again it seems to cease. For example, when I put it back in drive to pull away after being sat at traffic lights say, it stops. It's hard to explain, but I think you get the gist. I think the exhaust is original, so will investigate that further. Under tray seems secure, but can fully check when checking the gearbox oil. There does seem to be enough fasteners on the thing though, unlike my old VW.

Afternoon all,

Did a search for Jatco rattle and found my own thread…

Anyhoo, after being quiet for a long time it has started rattling again. It doesn't do it in neutral, park or reverse. It does it when any of the forward gears are selected, but only initially until drive is taken up.

The oil has done 30k.

Anyone out there had anything similar?

It may be the baffles rattling in the exhaust. Mine do. When going in/out of drive the revs change so the amount of air flow through the exhaust changes, and therefore the rattle may start/stop. Hence why you may think it's the auto gearbox.
