hi,can anyone tell me if i can do a check on my ird and vcu to see if there in good working order
i did notice once when the rear wheels were up on jacks that if you turn one wheel one way the other goes the other way,is this normal,

Try swapping the wheels over and turning them again. Do they still turn the same way or are they now turning the opposite direction? Draw a chalk arrow on the sidewall so you don't forget.

sounds like you need a new ird to me, wow thats gonna be expensive.i had this happen on a rangerover once i ended up selling it for spares as the replacement ird was worth wore than the car

When both wheels in the back are jacked off the ground and you turn one wheel forward the other side will turn backwards, this is the function of the differential and perfectly normal to me.

ok so you didn't fall for it, i thought everyone knew that a diferential made the wheels turn un oposite directions

am talking about the spare on the back!

On any other car I'd question that, but not on a freelander!

Yep - thats the best place to find out how to check.

Had mine up on a lift - 2 of us took a strong bar on front and back UJs and tried to 'flex' the VCU back & forth against each other - but it didn't shift a millimetre.

Does that sound like a valid way to check?

Personally - I think mine is Bu@@ered so have ordered a new one.......

However, anyone know how to check if the IRD has also been stuffed?

With the prop shaft off - gear in neutral - my IRD output cup can be rotated about 30mm before the crown wheel & pinion 'catch'. When it does it sounds like a bag of bolts being waggled back & forth - is this just a wide tolerance or more ominous?

I also get loads of vibration when accelerating from low revs and a huge juddering vibration when wound up to about 4000 rpm. Prop shaft is off now - but the vibes are even worse than before - clacking from the transmission is either IRD and/or a drive-shaft I think.

Jury is out on which it is or even if its both - any one-- any thoughts or comments.....
