HOW TO: Fit Light Guards

Fitted my Light Guards today and they look awesome!
the rear ones are even easier, just a case of unscrew old lights and add the guards with new screws.


HOW TO: Fit Light Guards





aswell as your bits in the box you will need:
3mm Drill bit
7mm Drill bit
11mm Drill bit
Electric Drill
Masking tape
ruler/flat object
pencil/center punch


1) Stick on your template(included with your guards) using masking tape making sure you use a flat object to lineup against and there is a rad on the bumper.




2) Using the 3mm drill bit pilot the center hole.




3) Using the 11mm drill bit make the hole the correct size, make sure you drill it deep enough otherwise this will make the guard wonkey.




4) Insert the rubber grommets.




5) Put masking tape on the wing and insert your light guard into the grommets, use a pencil or center punch(as i did) to mark your next holes on the wing.




6) Drill a 3mm pilot hole again and then use the 7mm drill bit to make hole right size. push in the metal screw inserts.




7) put the guard into the grommets and then screw into the wing.
Stand back and look at your new awesome light guard! do the same for other side then have a brew .

Please never say 'insert the rubber grommets' on lz again. At least you have the right section for that deviant behaviour.

Thanks for the write-up. I fancy some of these, but didn't feel hugely confident about drilling holes all over the shop - this makes it look easy!

What do you mean in 1. by needing something flat to line up against, and a rad on the bumper???

Great how to guide will be revisiting this thread as soon as I can get hold of a pair of FL 1 front light guards with the circle in the bumper type Arctic2

that's great, now can you show those at the independent LR garages how to fit them. as they are useless

Could also do with a "HOW TO: Get hold of a set of Face Lift lightguards" !!!

I know this is a VERY old thread but I have recently got a Freelander 1 2005 and need to attach the light guards.... but the pics in this thread are no longer available... anyone help?

They're pretty easy. Do you have a new kit? If second hand, do you have all the fittings?

Never mind how to fit them. How do you get the chuffing things off after 15+ years - to restore the headlamp lenses - when the wing fixings just turn...

Use an axe.

I think a mini hatchet is probably about right for most of the serious jobs on the FL1 mind @Hippo . I'd go for a splitting maul or double throwing axe if contemplating work on a tratter

Pull the wing out a bit and grab the back of the fixing with mole grips. Then undo the screw.

Not got around to it yet, but I got something similar to this for fixing riv-nuts in plastic.

Apologies for late reply.. yeah I got a new set with all the instructions and template but a little nervous so I thought at least seeing some pics of the stages may help!
