Hi,
As the title suggests I am new to landrovers. We have just been given a caravan and have a newborn, so decided on a freelander to cater for our needs.

It's a 2004 td4 face lift model with only 36000 miles on it, but it is a basic model so absolutely no gadgets. I would really like to know what can be retro fitted.I noticed there are wires behind some switches, so unsure how plug and play parts would be? I'm not too worried about the looks of the car, more comforts. It doesn't even have a trip computer, can that be added...even if there's a head unit which incorporate it?

On another note, are these characteristics of the car:

Windscreen wipers have a couple of seconds delay when selecting speeds?
The clutch seems to engage quite low down,no problem changing gear but just seems low?
The hill decent makes a nasty noise. Sounds to me like the abs is working but it is a loud noise?

Thanks for your help
Lorne

Lots of questions.
Here goes.
Some things can be retrofitted but a trip computer can't I don't think. I didn't think any Freelander 1 had one from the factory. You can get aftermarket gadgets that also have a trip function.
Low clutch could just need bleeding or ir could be the concentric.
The HDC does make some different noises, which one were you referring to?

Thanks Nodge,

Well it sounds a bit like its had a curry the night before....I assume its engaging the abs but it really is quite a crunching noise?
I hear that folding mirrors, electric seats, sat nav, heated front screen ect could of been fitted to some models, can these be fitted easily?

lorne

HDC does bang and knock about. It's the brakes grabbing on, on individual wheels. It's much quieter if the system is used on a slippery surface. ;)
Heated front seats can be retrofitted so can the leather. No Freelander had electric seat movement.
Fog lights can be fitted and so can the heated front screen. Even the power fold mirrors can but I think some wiring would be required. I had my mirrors fold when I locked the car (I really miss that option on my D3 :() The sat nav is part of the upgraded ICE system but tbh, it's pants.

plus there's cruise control. it dependent if it's an auto and the wiring is all there

Hi, I just swapped the doors on my freelander, the electric mirrors have extra wires (obviously) but they are not fitted as standard so you would have to add them, or get the loom from a breakers, the heated seats are great in the winter, would defo try and get some.

Sounds as though there are numerous easy upgrades then, great!
Do you guys know of a place to get these upgrades, or is it just a case of the usual ebay etc?

My Freelander has a trip computer.

Where the odo is there are 2 spindles sticking out. The left one would display outside temp if you have a North American model or do nothing in the rest of the world. The right one if you press's and let go will display the trip distance. To zero it push push it in when showing trip distance. Press again to go back to odo.

Don't both with the Becker Sat Nav. It is worse than pants. Get a Tom Tom or similar. Change the head unit and put in DAB & Bluetooth.

No Freelander 1 has seat height adjustment. Or electrically operated seats. Only air conditioning. No climate control.

Yours may have a fuel burner Heater with the exhaust pipe in front of the near side front wheel. Expect it to work tomorrow if the outside temp is low. Heats up the cabin by burning extra diesel. Later ones have a PTC heater which does the same thing but is electric.

Before you start to add stuff to the car make sure everything is in tip top condition. The car may have done 100,000 less than my '06 HSE, but it is 10 years old and things will start to perish like turbo hoses and assorted other rubber bushes.

Ha funny you should say to hold off.
So far Ive had a brake pedal switch go, the wipers seem to work when they want, anti roll bar bushes, brake lines corroded and now the fuel injector pump is leaking....I've only had it 3 weeks!!

:D

I've had a fair amount of work done to mine in the last 15 months. Mine is younger being a '06, but has over 130,000 miles on it now.

Check out my vehicle in my signature.
