Good morning all.

I have been lucky enough to be given a 1999 "V" 5 door Freelander by my Dad its a 2.0 XEDI. I have a few questions I was hoping someone could assist me with.

I am unsure as I have not collected the vehicle yet but can anyone tell me if it is the TD4 engine in this vehicle?

Also there is water getting into the cubby box/hole in the boot of the vehicle, I had been led to believe that this is due to the door seal perishing, but have looked on the threads on the site and they suggest that this could be the problem but could also be down to some screws at the top of the door or down to condensation.

A hosepipe test was done on the door yesterday and no leakage of water was detected in the box so was thinking that it maybe condensation but at times there has been up to an inch of water sloshing around in the cubby box/hole. Any ideas would be apprieciated

Cambelt what are the recommended mileages for change, the vehicle has done 98,000ish but unsure when it was last changed.

Any other things I should be thinking about doing or looking at/checking?

How easy is it to fit a towbar to the vehicle have seen several on Ebay.

Thanks in advance look forward to using this forum.

your cam belt first..

get it changed.. it is just good practice for the cost of a belt and a few hours to change it beats the cost of a new engine if/when it fails and if you change it it is going to be ok for 70k or so

It is not a TD4 (i belive these have cam chains rather than cam belts though have not checked though) yours is the DI engine made by rover.

It is a good lump fitted to many many vehicles including LDV vans etc. look after it with clean oil and it will run for an age (i wish i still had my DI rather than the TD4 rubish i have now in pieces)

tow bars bolt in about 8 places under the back and then there are the electrics. and it is up to you how you do this.

My 3 door leaked around the sides of the roof. and around the rear door. and had a goot 3" of water in the boot box. (though driving through the floods up to the wheel arches may not have helped that much) I think it tends to leak around the base of the door and over the plastic and then just soak down to the box

hope this helps...

Hi Andy

Tiny is an old L series diesel XEDI and has clocked up 165000 miles so far so keep the cam belt up to date and change your oil and filters regularly and you should have yourself a good reliable motor there.:)

I also had the cubby box problem from new - it does tend to be caused by water going under the rear door seal and condensation - a mixture of both. I fixed it by bathroom sealant under the rear plastic panel (that sits on the threshold of the rear door) and leaving the box lid ajar by locking it open. It is nice and dry now and has been for 2 years or so.

Towbars are a doddle to fit as they just bolt in underneath - threads are hidden by "stickers".

Take good care of your L series and she will serve you well!!;)

Hiya Andy,
Echo everything said so far, 'L' Series just seem to go on forever with regular oil changes. Owt else, just look it up on here!
