Evening Folks,

The car heater decided to stop working all of a sudden this evening. When to turn it on and nothing .

Now I checked the fuse , that's not blown any one had this issue ?

Theres a set of coils in the drivers footwell, right at the back of the center console. It looks like a green rectangle (colour may be different however) held in with two philips screws. Rectangle is around 4 inches long and 1.5 wide. It has a multiplug attached to the center of it.

Undo the multiplug, unscrew it and pull it out. My coils were snapped/burnt out and i only had 2 fan speeds working. Just stick a new one in and plug it all back up.

It's one of these... SmartSense Blower Motor Fan Series Resistor for Land Rover Freelander 1996-2006 | eBay

Morning Krisboats,

Update below

With the sudden drop in temperature yesterday and turning the car over this morning the heater decided to work. Now could this be a coincidence ?

I may just purchase one of those packs from the link you sent as it may go again.

I have heard the Landy's are horrendous for wiring Gremlins ??

Probably not.

Looking at the circuit digram, if it doesn't work at one or two speeds, yes, If it doesn't work anywhere at all, its not the pack.

No worse than any other car...

I'd say they are worse in terms of general suspension and transmission faults because they have more suspension and transmission in em! :D

Electrical go/no that varies intermittently with temperature sounds like a bad connection.

Now. Some questions.

Do you have aircon?

Is the fan controlled by a 5 way rotary switch?

Does it not work at all, or only on certain settings. In particular position 5 which is de ice/demist is a bit special? And doesnt use te resistor pack and will switch on the aircon..

Have you checked the fuse?

What age is the vehicle?

There are two likley scenarios with this new information. The first is that you simply have a bad connection or broken wire that fails when it gets warm

A similar possibility is that the fan is simply worm out carbon brushes wise. In which case a new motor is indicated.

the actual wiring that controls the fan completely, is not very extensive.

Can you use/do you possess, a voltmeter?
Can you read a circuit diagram?

Diagnosing electrical faults that disappear is, by the way. almost impossible. You are talking to an electronic engineer here...we used to use cans of freeze spray to identify bad soldered joints in the hope that that would make them 'happen'. If its wires you are slightly better off, because you can wiggle wires until you find one that cases the problem - and that enables you to track things down more

If the thing is working now, I'd be inclined to leave it until it goes bad again, and then start looking.

Lenny,

I do have Air Con but that is on a button on its own. The fan has a 4 way rotary switch. It worked fine yesterday hand we had a sudden drop in temperature and a few inches of snow and when I went out last night the heater worked on no setting and neither did the Air Con button. Turned the car over this morning and worked fine.

Fuses was checked & its a 54 plate.

Is there a part number for this motor ?

Lenny not sure if you can help with another one of my posts ? Central Locking Issue

From the ebay listing:
Symptoms of a Blown Resistor
A faulty resistor can cause a number of problems with the heating/HVAC system of a car, including but not limited to:
- No hot air
- Heating only working intermittently

- Heating only working on some settings (when the resistor is bypassed)

It takes 2 minutes to pull it out. Take a look at it, if the coils are damaged or burnt out then try a new one.

If it looks like this:

Then it's probably something else.

If it looks like this:

Then i'd wager it's the cause of your issues. It's really easy to get to so you might as well take a look, it's the green bit on this picture...

Ah. no aircomn EITHER.

That's probably a bad fuse connection.
There is very little between the battery and the aircon AND the fan. Its all on one wire and fuse to the rotary switch and aircon switch which is fed via that rotary .

Id say you have a loose connection either in the fuse box area or the actual rotary switch in the console.

The fuse is in the box in the drivers side glove box. Fuse 4 25A. remove that (should be some little red tongs in that box to grab it with) and see if its OK. And fits in properly and isn't corroded.

The quickest way to see if power is getting to the whole lot is to set the fan to any position except off (or demist*) and hit the aircon switch. If it lights up there is power to the rotary switch and beyond.

If the fuse is ok then you may have a wiring prob to the rotary switch, which is more of a pig to get at and I am not totally sure how you do that.

manual seems to say you have to pull the radio out and then remove the heater control panel. Then you can get at all the wires and connectors behind it.

I need to do that to mine. There's a bulb gone to light up the heat position selector.

(*demist automatically selects aircon so it won't light up there)
