Been a while since I posted on here. Freelander going well, now on 220000 miles lol.

Just thought I'd let you guys know I got the heated front screen working. Basically the screen was already in, I bought a button in the hope that it I could fit it and it would work as the wiring to the dash was all in place.

After further investigation it turned out there was no loom under the bonnet and the wires to the screen were just tucked away under the scuttle panel. So, did a bit of phoning around and found a guy breaking a FL with heated screen in Manchester, 2 hours later I was taking bits off the car with no real idea of what to look for.

Once I found the loom getting it out took about an hour, the hardest part was trying to get the loom from where it had been routed under the box with the ecu in it. Once out the loom is very basic, one wire going to the battery terminal, 3 fuses a relay, a connector for the switch loom which was tucked under the fuse box and 2 wires one for either side of the screen. Fitting it back into my FL took 10 minutes, just need to re route the wiring going to the switch loom. I have not followed the original route the loom took as it was a pain to get it from under the ecu box and I took the earth connections from the bolts holding the wings on lol. But it looks OEM and once I have re routed the switch wiring the engine bay looks standard.

Screen works fine with no missing elements and goes off after about 10 minutes. It does get very warm though, not like the screen on my galaxy which works fine but doesn't feel warm to the touch.

Total cost £75, £25 for the button and £50 for the loom.

Cheers

Simon

Pitty you didnt take a pic to post for peeps to copy the loom..

Was gonna get some pics but the loom is encased in plastic conduit and the fuse/relay holder are covered in rubber that is starting to perish so didn't want to take it apart and risk breaking something. The loom is so simple it consists of the following:

Thick wire from battery +ve terminal which goes to a fuse holder and relay holder. 3 x fuses one for either side of the screen and one for the switch. From the here there are two wires one for either side of the screen and a further two wires that plug into the switch loom.

The screen has connectors for the +ve wires and I just attached the earths to the rearmost bolts that hold the wings on. There are proper earthing points under the scuttle panel but i couldn't be arsed taking the wipers etc off lol.

Mine is a facelift model and had the wiring for the switch already in place including under the bonnet, if this wiring wasn't there it would have been a much bigger job. The screen is controlled by the CCU which uses a signal from the oil pressure switch to determine if the engine is running and the CCU also switches the screen off after a certain time. This functionality must be part of the switch loom as the main screen loom is completely stand alone. This is why I would have not bothered if the switch wiring is not in place. If it is and the heated screen is in place fitting the loom takes 10 minutes tops.

I will try to get some pictures in a bit

I have read in another land rover community, that it is difficult to retrofit heated front screen on vehicles with PTC electric heater. If so, the PTC heater must be disconnected, which means no warm air during the winter..

Is that true?

cheers

Bg freelander: My car has the PTC heater, I didn't have to make any changes to this as the heated screen loom is completely separate. I did have concerns whether the alternator would be overloaded with the PTC heater and heated screen on but can report no issues, even with lights on as well.

Freelandie71: If you have a facelift FL pop the top left blanking plate out of the central console, if there is a wiring loom with plug then you have the switch loom in place. I will try to post some pics up shortly.

Pictures as requested...

Below is the connector from the switch to the loom, it was tucked under the rubber pipe in the right of the pic.

Below is the loom (circled) this box contains 3 fuses and a relay. It was attached better, I need to redo it lol. The other two boxes are for the PTC heater.

If you want any more let me know, I won't be opening the box for loom though as it is very perished, don't want to break owt!

Thank you for the prompt reply S1monm!!!

I have PTC and have only ONE of these fuse boxes at the moment - the one in the circle from your picture and the blue arrow in my second picture!

The heated screen wiring loom has 2 boxes( have seen it in many cars) - Picture 1, which means that it has to be attached to the existing one for the PTC? Should it be connected to the batterie as well?

Cheers

Sorry mate you're correct. The PTC has one box, the first box for the heated screen clipped on to it, the other box didn't hence cable tie! One has 3 fuses and the other has a relay. On the loom is a thick +ve cable with ring on the end, there is enough room on the +ve post on the battery to fit this on. The earths are either side of the screen under the scuttle panel.

Cheers for that, mate!

will post once im ready with the installation;)

The pic of the loom shows how simple it is.

The cable with the ring on goes to positive battery terminal. The purple and white cables with the white plugs in connect to each side of the screen (just plug in). The earths from the screen bolt on under the scuttle panel, it's obvious where they go. And the small black plug connects to the switch loom as per my first pic. The job took me about 30 mins to do, but I used the rear most bolts that attach the wings on for earths as I couldn't be arsed taking the scuttle off!!

I have to take the scuttle off anyway, because of the fitment of the heated screen....

And what is your experience..How much takes till the ice has been melted from the outside the the screen?

cheers

Takes about a minute too clear the screen. Also useful when it's damp to demist the screen. Bloody brilliant lol.

Thanks guys. That is useful info. When I need a new windscreen I'll pay the extra and get the heated one. I have the switch loom in place. Just need a switch and windscreen loom.

Hi S1mon,

Great to see I have found a useful post after many months of asking. Now my question / question's to you are what year is your FL1 ? Mine is a 2004 Mid spec with the new headlights and I wan to fit a Heated Front Screen and am not totally sure what's all required.

I know that I will need a Heater Switch for inside where would this be placed once bought and will the wiring be there already just for the plug to be fitted in ?

Relay I will also require.

Now will the loom already be in place and if so where will this be found and will I need any other cables if so part numbers would be a great help.

Lastly will I need the LR STEALERS to program this in so that we can use the Heated Screen or is it simply plug in & Play?

From hay i have read you need three things. 1, the switch. You should have the wiring there fixed to the blank. It is the top right blank where the switch goes. 2, the wire harness ymq000990, and lastly the screen. Thanks it it really.
