I live in the South of France and bought a 2001 TD4 last August. Towards the end of the summer the tailgate refused to open (the window does not go down) but just before I was about to send it in for repair it started to work again and has done so without fault throughout the winter. However one day this week the temperature went up into the 20's and all of a sudden the tailgate refuses to open. I have tried to manually assist the window with no avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try disconnecting the battery. Sorted it on mine last weekend when the door wouldn't open. I never got to the bottom of it. Check all relays, fuses etc.

I had given up, drove home and it started working!

maybe a long shot, but have you looked at the rubber seals around the window? When it's cold, the rubber will be hard, when the temperature rises it becomes softer, it might be soft enough to be "sticky" somewhere if it's beginning to break down and cause extra friction.

Just a thought and an easy cheap check before you strip the door down

The next morning I managed to open the tailgate because the weather had turned cold again. Kept it partially down and drove to garage, bought silicon spray band coated all rubbers etc. When I took it fully down it got stuck for a while but then decided to work. Since then OK. Not sure if it is the silicon or the cold weather! Will keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again.
