Graunching Noise

There is no relation between the hand brake and the foot brakes on a disco, the HB is a drum fitted to the rear prop shaft, and obviously the FB's work on the wheel discs.

It sounds like worn out rear pads, have you checked them ??

There will always be 'play' when turning a wheel by hand with the HB applied, there are a lot of joints and gears on a Disco.

One word of CAUTION . . . you should NEVER apply the HB when moving, as you can break a half shaft (the shafts the go from the diff to each wheel hub) the vehicle is not designed to have the HB applied when moving, it is a PARKING brake ONLY !!!!

yep sounds like pads change em quick ya mite save sum money rather than spending on discs/drums

they all sound the same so ya get the same symptoms and the cure is the same wether it be a mini or a freelander ,can ya feel anything thru yer brake pedal?

No but the vehicle shudders a bit though when braking.

By the way I had the wheels and drums off and all looks good.

strange,just a shame i dont know abit more about freelanders defenders un series more my thing but it sounds like a mounting problem or a bush some where in the setup

It feels like bush play when I try to turn the wheels by hand, I will put it up on the ramps tomorrow and have a good look.

check rear diff mount and subframe attachment points - they are prone to cracking.

i had same problem making a horrible noise from what we thought were the breaks because only happend under breaking but turned out to be the rear subframe.

Thanks, when you say subframe do you mean wear in the bushes?

no - the subframe attachment fittings break - its a nut welded into the bodywork - the weld breaks and the subframe can move.

the chassis is also prone to cracking.

Ok thanks I will check it out tomorrow, if it is the nuts that have come detached is this an easy fix?

yu have to cut a hole in the floor pan - neva tried.
