Question Gearbox leak

i first noticed a smell of burning oil comming from the car so had a look under it and there was some oil in the bottom of the engine tray so i investigated where it was comming from and it seems to be comming from where the gearbox linkage goes into the actual gearbox is it normal for any oil whatso ever to come out? and if not have i got a major problem?
its only a lil bit
the smell can also be smelt from the exhaust pipe at the back but theres no blue smoke what so ever so i dont think its being burnt in the actual cylinders.
sos for being boring and long winded lol
cheers
