Gearbox Issue? Or the new clutch?

So suddenly (and I mean suddenly) I can't get my Freelander into 1st, 3rd, or 5th gear? 2nd 4th & Reverse I can get though. There was no rough running or early warning signs. Parked up on the drive fine then couldn't select any of the above but can still select 2nd 4th & reverse

I had a new clutch about 6 weeks ago - new clutch assembly and master. Could this be related.

Anyway any ideas as to where I should start looking?

Many thanks

Fritz

Hey Freelance, thanks for the reply.

I'm struggling to find this in Rave. If I drop the belly pan will the linkage become obvious? Is there any section that is particularly prone to failing?

Fritz

BTW I should have said this is an 02 TD4 so it's the Getrag gearbox I guess? Not sure if that makes a difference to the linkage though

A relative of mine as the same problem, all of a sudden gears are hard to select he as a 1.8 Ks engine, I did remember reading on the forum somewhere about a chap fixing his linkage with a bolt but can not seem to find the thread now, so if you managed to solve this please do tell :D

You don't even need to drop the pan, if you slide under the car you can see the two long rods from the gearstick in the centre of the car. Follow them down towards the engine and the lower of the two will mount into the back of the gearbox with a fairly big universal mount. Check that out as the linkage on the mount is pretty crappy and could be something as simple as your roll pin has come out.

That was me - but that was for a sloppy gearchange, not this issue I'm afraid

Can you select the gears fine without the engine running?

If so then it's your clutch hydraulics - will probably need bleeding

Thanks for the replies lads, we removed the air filter housing and cleaned up the rusty bracket and rod refitted the air cleaner box etc and all seems well but it is really rusted, so a new one maybe the way forward, also changed his VCU over for the one I had spare as his VCU damper had come loose/off in all 3.5 hours work with coffee break's :D so great day really considering it was nearly raining all day.
