Gasket between LH Lower Intake and Intake Plenum???

Couple quick questions. This is a 2002 KV6 NAS vehicle.

Is there a gasket between the LH Lower intake manifold and the intake plenum (upper intake manifold)? The Rave manual only mentions the RH intake to plenum seals and o-rings, nothing about a LH intake gasket. MiamiBritish has a gasket available, part # LKJ100680L. Don't know if I need it?

The reason I'm asking, I have rich mixture codes both banks, coolant loss when engine cools with no external signs. When I took off the MAF I discovered coolant in the air duct between the MAF and the TB. So I'm going to replace the lower intake gaskets along with all gaskets and seals above them.

Whats already been done; New intake plenum and VIS controllers, Plugs ( No sign of coolant on the old ones), New trans solenoids, New MAF, fuel pressure test was good, injector leak down test was good, cylinder pressure test good, coolant system pressure test was good, TP sensor/IAT/Coolant Temp all good readings, no vacuum leaks found, new battery.

Also, just curiosity, I've seen the term "plate" to describe a couple Freelanders???

Hi.
There are 3 O rings for the front manifold and 3 rubber gaskets for the rear manifold. You can normally get away with refitting them.
Are you sure it's coolant in the intake? Sometimes condensation can collect in that area. This would be more evident if the vehicle is used for short journeys in cold weather.
I've never heard the term "plate" before.

By plate are you referring to someone saying its a 54 plate? If so it is just referring to the year, it is the way the UK cars are registered...

Thanks for the "plate" explanation ZdomZ.

I'm sure its coolant and it was more than condensation. At first I though the coolant port at the throttle body was leaking, GM's have a port on the TB. This car does not. Looking at the mating are of the LH Intake and the Plenum I don't see a gasket (still bolted on of course). I was curious if this was the source of my issue.

The Rave manifold reads as follows:

1. Clean seal faces on inlet manifold chamber and
inlet manifolds.
2. Fit new 'O' rings to RH inlet manifold and new
seals to manifold chamber.
3. Position inlet manifold chamber, secure RH coil
harness clips in inlet manifold chamber support
brackets.
4. Connect multiplugs to plug top coils and secure
with locking clips.
5. Align inlet manifold chamber to inlet manifolds,
fit and tighten bolts to 18 Nm (13 lbf.ft).
6. Align inlet manifold chamber support brackets
to RH camshaft cover, fit and tighten bolts to 10
Nm (7.5 lbf.ft).

I've attached the diagram from the MiamiBritish website showing a gasket???

Any Thoughts?

There is no way that coolant can get into the intake. What you are seeing is coming from the breather system. If you pull out the large breather pipe, you might find water droplets in there too.
This water finds it's way to the throttle body and pools there. I've seen the same thing many times.
The gasket shown fits into a recess in the plastic plenum. The front manifold is sealed with 3 large O rings.
If you are worried, get some replacements but as I said. The old O rings and gasket are normally ok to reuse ;)

Thank you for the reply Nodge68. As the plenum was recently replaced by the dealer, I agree the seals and gaskets will be ok as well. I was concerned that this gasket was missing, I don't see it looking at that seam. Thanks again for the info. I'm greatly appreciative. I'll tear everything apart and if I see a bad gasket or seal then I'll order a replacement, definitely replacing the lower intake gaskets though. I'll keep you posted.

Ok. Got the upper intake plenum removed. I can confirm there is coolant in the plenum and around the intake seals. Don't know how it got there??? Had to stop working on the poor thing as my fingers weren't grasping anything anymore, they were frozen. Finish up the job tomorrow I'm hoping. Small set back though, broke the small coolant line to the overflow. I'll slap together a temp repair until I get the new one in the mail.
