Need help identifying possible sources of a leak. I changed my oil yesterday and whilst under the bonnet noticed a leak. It seems to be coming from around the left hand side of the dipstick area, below the intercooler hose and dripping on to the auxilliary drive belt and alternator, which in turn seems to be spraying it all over that area. It's not a big leak, and it doesn't seem to be engine oil. I think it's fuel but could be wrong. It's all just black and gundgey to me. I've had a look around the hoses and they all seem ok. On top of that I thought it might be coolant as the coolant level was way down, but I suspect that would be more obvious as it would be reddish colour right?

Any help or pointers will be appreciated.

Cheers.

Have you changed the crankcase breather lately? If not it could be due to crankcase pressure building up. If you do need to change it use the replacement BMW cyclonic type, part no. 11 127 779 367 from BMW, not L/R.

Hi Vic, thanks for responding. Yes I changed the crankcase breather last summer. Another thing I didn't mention in earlier post was that you can only see the residue of the leak from underneath, looking up at the alternator. You cannot see any evidence of a leak from above. Do you think this could be left over from before I changed the breather?
