Hi Guys
Can someone help please.I own a freelander1,but when i bought it the IRD had been replaced ,but the propshaft have not. I was advised not to replace it,becuse these vehicles have endless problems with the IRD's and it is better not to put back the propshaft. I have spoken to sevral Land Rover mechanics here is SA all with the same advice. Is There any truth to this, and if so is there a way to remedy the problems. I would very much like to put back the propshaft, but don't want to risk the problems that goes with it. The car has been running without problems and now has 206 000km on the clock.
Any information regarding this issue will be appreciated

Thanks

It's the vcu that is the weak point........the accepted life time of the units is approx 70000 miles at which point they should be changed or regularly checked.
When they fail they will cause damage to either ird or rear diff or both.

IRD are pretty good as stated the VCU is the problem when i got mine i didnt check it and withing 2 months it seized solded and blew a hole in my IRD but VCU at fault

Now how do you check the VCU? The IRD concern the first Freelanders had was sorted by Land Rover in the early days. Is SA, South Africa or South Australia, or something else.

I wonder how many IRD failures are due to no oil changes rather it a fault with the product.

Hi Guys

SA is for South Africa. Thanks for the info on the IRD issue this clarifies a view points

The lifespan of the vcu can be dependant on how it has been driven and on what surfaces it has been driven on.

They can show signs of stiffening way earlier than 70k and much further beyond 70k
