Freelander window mechanism advice

Hi, I have a replacement window mechanism for my drivers door as my original cable snapped, I have noticed that the cable has come off the pulleys at each corner, I have tried to put it back on but I cannopt stretch the cable enough to do this without bending the sliding bars. Anyone any ideas how I should reconnect this cable? How do i open the window motor to check inside? Is it a sealed unit

The motor is a sealed unit but the winder drum is not. I wouldn't recommend you open this as it will come apart and cause you much work. The cables are spring tensioned so it should be possible to pull them back on the pulleys. You will have to get the regulator out of the door first though, or at the very least release the glass clamps.

thanks, I've had the mechanism out and in and out a few times, each time it will move up but only a few inches down, i know that cables have tensioners on the end but I'm having to put ridiculous pressure on tyhe cable to try to fit it over the pulleys, thought that there might be a problem in the motor winder some sort of blockage or snag! How does the motor know when to stop moving downwards? is there a built in stop? or is it the cable?

The cables are murder tight so there is nothing wrong with that. The motor stops pulling when you take your finger off the switch. Therefore the window stops moving when it runs into something. Nothing complicated there.

Check the pulley recess, it will only allow a cable to fed though or removed when in a certain position.

It may need a touch of adjustment by bending it closer to the puley

thanks for that, the bloody cables are tight!! I think I bent one of the metal supports trying to fit the cable, luckily i had a spare, when you say the pulley recess what exactly do you mean? I might know it as something else! BTW went to my local Land Rover dealer and they wouldn't do anything to even offer any advice! So much for customer loyalty, they've gone all snobby now!!

No they wont offer free advice, that's why I came up with the bicycle brake cable fix

Look closely at a plastic pulley and the 'shrowd' that hands over it, try to remove the cable and it won't. You have to rotate the pulley to a certain point in order to facilitate removing/fitting of the cable.
