I've got a 2.5 V6 freelander, it has sprung a leak, I have looked underneath to try and locate the problem but am strugling to locate the source. It seems to be coming from the sump gasket area. Does the water jacket extend down this far on the V6, being a simple biker at heart it is a little to compicated for me.

If any one can give me advice it would bemuch appreciated.

Are you sure its not from the aircon, The aircon still works when switched off if set at screen settings

Set to floor and run for 2-3 days and see if still leaking

no, its not the air con, I am losing about 1 litre a day from the coolant system. I have checked all the hoses and can see nothing. I have removed the sump guard and water seems to be seeping from around the sump gasket area, drivers side, but nothing is going into the oil and no oil leaks externally.

The expansion bottle cap is known to leak but 1 litre a day is excessive for a cap

My cap leaked and it dripped from around o/s of sump tracking down the pipes

No, the water is coming from very low down, there is plenty of it. It does not leak until the engine gets warm and there is pressure in the system.

Floppy flap man should be around soon ,he's the v6 eggspert. . .ang on give im er shout fer ya. . . .FLOPPY!!!!:)

the water seems to be coming from the sump gasket area front right hand side, where the oil cooler bolts on.

small heat exchanger thing, water pipes and oil feed in and out, I assume this cools the oil, perhaps you can tell me if not?

Remove your big plastic cover and get a torch...check between inlet manifolds and you will probably see coolant gin the center of your "V" (there is a drain from V that comes out at rear right of engine behind water pump so can confuse the issue and point in wrong direcion)

If so can be a number of things and all a bastward... cracked thermostat housing most likely but could be inlet manifold gasket or any of the many pipes around there.

If its in that area you might as well get thermostat/pump/belts changed if motor is over 50k miles as is expensiv and will need doing anyway.

Doobreydog, Many thanks for the advice, I have located the leak, it is coming from the thermostat, looks like it is leking where the stat connects to the water pump pipe and is probably just the O-ring, but Landrover only supply the thermostat complete with seals, ah well, at least I dan set about fixing the job now I have found the source.
