towbar fitting instructions

Hi Guys – I have a Freelander 2 with the sports styling kit and would like to fit a towbar.

I have just had a quote back from Pentland Land Rover in Edinburgh for £616.99 to supply and fit!!

Fixed height towbar £276.57
Bracket (req’d for sports styling kit) £28.13
Electrics N/S £312.29


Given that I only want to tow my boat to the loch and then drop it in and out twice a year this seems pretty extortionate – anybody have any ideas on whether this is a typical cost (and where I could get it done cheaper) or how difficult it is (specifically the electrics) to fit yourself?

the price is an outrage ! do a search on ebay to find out how much the parts are. then if you don't fancy doing it yourself, have a ring round some local towbar fitting companies, some will come to you if you wish. I think you'll find you can get it quite a lot cheaper.

Although mine is a freelander 1, the towbar cost £85 from ebay and took and hour and a half to fit including the single electrics.

If you're only towing a boat and never intend towing a caravan, just go for the single electrics to power lights and indicators on trailer. No point having the split charge doubles if your not towing a caravan.

this does gloss over the problem of it being fitted with the sports bumper, maybe ring just tow and ask. worst case you're going to have to cut the oh so pretty bumper yourself. This was just the first search, so if you go through them all, you might even find a kit to suit the bumper.

Check for it over the internet. You will get lots of manual there.

bought towbar kit for a 2006 freelander from pf jones ltd on e bay,it came with all reqd bolts,washers etc also tow ball and electric socket, cost £75 took only 3/4 hour to fit towbar,tho i recomend tapping out the three fixing points on nearside with a 10x1.5 mm tap to clear threads as were very dirty tapping out made life a lot easier,wiring up was done with scotchlocks entirely on o/s rear wiring behind boot trim, all in all simple job.
