Just had 2001 Freelander (46000mls) in for a service and been told that the tappits need changed within 2000miles at a cost of nearly £1000! Is this a normal problem. I'm wondering whether it's worth spending that amount of money on a 7 year old car. I've never noticed anything wrong. They also said the timing belt needs replaced, which is another £400!

sounds like a rip off to me....

timing belt yes will need doing but could do it yourself for a lot less than that - not to mention that if they are going to strip the head to do the tappets they will have already done 1/2 the job so charging you their labor costs in total for the belt and the tappets is robbery

Thanks for your speedy reply. I'm wondering if having to change the tappets at this stage is a normal Freelander problem.

what engine?

No its not a common problem, not at that mileage. on what diagnosis are they going on, you can't tell until the cams have been removed.
sounds like crap

It's a 2.5 V6 automatic. They said it was very noisy and the tappets were worn. They're generally a reliable local garage. I just wonder if it's worth spending all that money on this age of car. They also said the exhaust would need changed soon. I'm thinking if I do get the repairs done, what else is likely to go?! Automatic gear box?

Probably more likely to be a problem with viz (variable intake assembly) valves which is very common on V6 and could possibly be confused with tappet noise by complete numpty with no knowledge of motor. Viz valves cant be repaired and should cost in region of £400 to get replaced (ensure any software updates are done at same time)

Personally would run from the "generally reliable local garage" as anyone without specific knowledge of the engine is likely to do more harm than good.

I doubt very much whether your timing belt needs changing (70k mile service) but if so you will want to do all 3 belts and water pump (waste of time changing main belt without the little extra to do pump) and while your in there get the thermostat changed as well .... a good independent should be charging around £500-£600 for all.

Belts should be changed at 70,000 miles or 6 years, so in theory they need changing.
V6 had a software problem which damaged the VIS valves, and wasn't rectified until after 2001. ( mine went at about 35,000 miles). landrover do a FREE software upgrade, but the damage is prbably already done. Check these threads
