Freelander tailgate issues

we have our first land rover freelander, its a 99 3dr diesel. On the test drive I noticed the rear window was not working, I asked the seller and was told it never worked. When the button on the centre console is pressed a buzzer sounds, also the door open warning on the driver display is on all the time.

After buying, we have had it for a few weeks I have found that the rear wiper, demister and rear washer won't work. Has anyone else had such a problem, I asked my garage to check it out but they never did. I don't want to go buying regulators and motors if its a sensor or electric problem that I have not heard of.

Any direction would be great. :)

Sounds like all related to the switch within the rear window mechanism or the window cable system.

When you press the door handle, the rear window should drop by about 15mm to clear the plastic trim and allow the door clearance to open.

When the door is closed the glass/window will rise by the same amount. If this isn't happening the rear wiper etc prob thinks the door is open and consequently won't work.

Take the trim off and have a look.

I had the same problem but it's now fixed. There is a small switch inside the locking mechanism that has alot of play in it due to shoddy build quality - mine had about 2mm of play in it and the smallest bump would cause the door open light to come on and the your wipers and heater etc etc won't work.

Me and a mate to the locking mech apart and got to the switch, we pushed it in firmly and then put a small screw behind it through the plastic casing just to stop it coming back out again. It's been perfect since :).

Thanks guys, checked the fuse's today and seen the fuse was missing, put one in now and when close the tailgate it makes a noise but still not working. Have a few things to look at now and see. Freelaner, I will have a look at the plugs too. Cheers.

i had this problem with ours,
checked the relays
all the plugs
recalibration
new rear door loom and still nothing
took the rear wiper motor off, checked and put back on
checked all micro switches

still nothing

in the end i started looking at the less normal things,

on the window motor where the cable goes on to the motor there are 5 or 6 r clips holding the cable to motor. I pulled them all out closed the door put the ignition on and pressed window down swith. IT WORKED. put the window back up, then put all the r clips back in. Now everthing works.

it looked like the cable had twisted a bit.

hope this helps you

when it's open or closed?

it should be fixed still when closed cos it's trapped in the door recess on the rubber

mine is quite loose when it's open, i assume this is normal

When its when it is open, well I guess its normal then. But really does seem very loose, as I said alot to do I think but hope I can get it fixed. I found yesterday there was no fuse for the tailgate window. After putting one in I now hear a noise when I close the tailgate.

Just a up date. Took the panel off the tailgate to look inside. :( found a massive mess, regulator is wrecked, the back windscreen is been held in place and up with pieces of wood held in place with screws. I think it will be cheaper to look for a working tailgate on a written off car and fit that.
