Superlocking Alarm System
Clutch (you really need to poke the clutch down to get into reverse!)

And that is just about all that went wrong with my Freelander (not bad huh?)!

Agreed, we need to be more specific, I just bought a G4 Freelander here in California, KV6 engine, (02, 30 k miles, on its second tranny, very very cheap 1 lady owner, and I need to know how to keep it running as I really want to do some desert trips. I fancy the EMS 1 digital gauge from Madman that should allow me to monitor coolant level, coolant temp, engine temp and oil pressure. Digital Car Gauges - Madman Automotive Products. Is it necessary to measure tranny tmp also? I think the HGF is known (liner movement and fretting) but does anybody know what is the major failure mechanism of the JATCO tranny?
I have already ordered a spare thermostat and housing, does anybody else know of anything I can do to ensure the longevity of this engine and tranny?
I want to try and show that this can be a reliable engine and that this is another case of British engineering, brilliant in conception but let down at the last hurdle by poor implementation.

The JATCO auto box is quite solid [used in quite a few motors] but changing the oil bout 40,000 miles is recommended . . . .the tourque converter at its output normaly go's first or internal high speed solinoids [but when it gets to that stage might as well get a re -con box fitted. . . . .just make sure that whoever re-cons it is good
