Viscous coupling siezed
IRD (transfer box) failed, stripped down to see how serious this was, complete bearing failure which caused many broken teeth on geartrain.
After changing the IRD the '3 Amigos' are now lit, ABD/TC/HDC warning lights, presumably because the wheels were spinning in a way that confused the ABS computer when the IRD was off and now cannot reset these without a main dealer.
windscreen wiper mechanism very worn.

Clock display needed 99p worth of nokia screen elastomers to fix.
Broken downpipe bracket replaced by £2.99 exhaust clamp and angle iron.

well phooter showed thet the high speed change over solinoids [on inside er box] wear slow un other fluid drives were not up to speed aswell, so i thought as you have to take a lot of werk ,it wood be daft[no pun intended:D ] if summit else wint. . . .total cost £1,400

Superlocking Alarm System
Clutch (you really need to poke the clutch down to get into reverse!)

And that is just about all that went wrong with my Freelander (not bad huh?)!

Agreed, we need to be more specific, I just bought a G4 Freelander here in California, KV6 engine, (02, 30 k miles, on its second tranny, very very cheap 1 lady owner, and I need to know how to keep it running as I really want to do some desert trips. I fancy the EMS 1 digital gauge from Madman that should allow me to monitor coolant level, coolant temp, engine temp and oil pressure. Digital Car Gauges - Madman Automotive Products. Is it necessary to measure tranny tmp also? I think the HGF is known (liner movement and fretting) but does anybody know what is the major failure mechanism of the JATCO tranny?
I have already ordered a spare thermostat and housing, does anybody else know of anything I can do to ensure the longevity of this engine and tranny?
I want to try and show that this can be a reliable engine and that this is another case of British engineering, brilliant in conception but let down at the last hurdle by poor implementation.

The JATCO auto box is quite solid [used in quite a few motors] but changing the oil bout 40,000 miles is recommended . . . .the tourque converter at its output normaly go's first or internal high speed solinoids [but when it gets to that stage might as well get a re -con box fitted. . . . .just make sure that whoever re-cons it is good :)

2001 TD4 gs auto, blown turbo pipes at 80,000
replaced front discs at about same time
