Hi, know this topic has been covered for older models but very frustrated. i have a freelander1 2006 2.0 td4 (bmw). had an intermittent starting problem ... over last 4 weeks car wudnt start on 4 occasions. was turning but not firing. after leaving car overnight started straight away. on last occasion went to car next morning, still wouldnt start. used easy start in the intake, car fired but didnt keep running.... which leads me to assume possible fuel pump failure...not sure whether there is 1 or 2 pumps on 2006 model?.. or how to access them... any help aprecciated..thanks

thanks for reply OP. would engine not keep running after starting with easy start if injectors ok?

Usually yes but i guess it could depend on just how bad the leak back is.

firstly though, you should establish whether the LP fuel pump was running when the engine refused to start?

It's behind the right hand rear wheel arch liner.

ok sorry, shud have said in original post. Didnt hear any buzzing / whirring from pump behind rear arch....

One thing you can try is next time you have the non start situation give the pump a knock and see if it starts running. Then try to start the engine.

What mileage has it done?

car wont start at all fired with easy start then died... has done 27,000 miles only.. how do i access the pump? do i need to remove plastic wheel arch liners?

Only 27k! well under the circumstances I wouldn't expect it to be the pump then but I guess you should still eliminate it. Remove the arch liner and all will be revealed.

Once you know whether or not it works post back.

pump appears to be dead , no sign of buzzing after giving it a knock.... been quoted £140 for lp pump from marshalls lr. hopefully resolved tomorrow......

You should note though that even with a healthy pump it will only run for up to approximately 1 minute after ignition is switched on if the engine is not started. Once the fuel lines to the HP pump are pressurised the pump cuts out.

Filter was full of crap, to the point that was almost blocked, which may have put extra strain on pump causing failure?... guy at garage said around 10 fault codes showed on diagnostics, (6 fuel related).Anyway new pump & filter fitted today, no codes showing and car starting fine :D .. Total cost was £215 inc fitting..so not too bad. Just happy to have it back up & running.... Your help much apprecciated Chaser & OP...

Glad to hear it's up and running again, a blocked filter will take out the pump. For a fuel filter to be almost blocked at 27k suggests that there may be more crap in the tank. The recommended change interval for a Td4 fuel filter is every 60k! If the garage haven't already done it you should remove the tank pick up unit (simple job and accessed under rear seat) and check for crap both inside the tank and on the pick up strainer.
