Freelander 2 - Engine failure/write off!

Hi. I have a 2007 freelander 2 which was registered in September of that year and has a full service history with the original Land Rover dealer that supplied the vehicle. In the middle of April, on the way to catch a ferry, a central bearing went in the engine and I have been told by the Land Rover dealer the car was taken too, that after removing the sump they found it was full of bits of metal and the engine was a write off. They then quoted 13,500 Euro to supply and fit a new engine. The car was 6-7 months out of the three year warranty and has only covered 85,000 km (53,000 miles). After some discussion with both the garage where the car was taken too, and the supplying dealer, the garage has submitted a goodwill claim on my behalf. I continued on to France with another car and am now on my way home and will be contacting the garage for news of the claim. Does anybody out there have or know of someone who has had a similar problem or indeed had a successful and large out of warranty period claim?

Where are you, you are quoting Euros and KM's so presume you are not in the UK, if so the sales of goods act won't apply. Bit more info please.

Thanks for the link Mad hat man. I live in Ireland so that act does not apply, although I think we might have something similar here and will check it out.

Hi Nickcc. I am in west coast of Ireland hence euros and km.

I had a similar problem with my previous car (C180 MB) where the Valeo radiator failed and buggered up the torque convertor, MB paid app 90% of the cost with the rest down to wear and tear. I had to keep pushing (took about 4 months) for reimbursement even though it was a known fault.

can we not get short blocks any more?

Just heard back from Garage - Land Rover originally offered zero but have now come back with 25%. Suggested we know get on to them directly. Do Land Rover expect me to remain a customer into the future? We would have been changing the car next year but it is extremely unlikley to be another LR product.

You need to kick up a bit of a fuss , if ive learnt anything about Land Rover Customer Care (this is direct to LR , not to dealer) its that you need to be reasonable , but very very firm.

You also need to keep ringing the dealer (speak to the Service Manager or GM).


Dealerships have a Goodwill calculator that they use the calculate the % of goodwill offered. That is what they will originally tell you , but this is by no means final , just standard offer. Speaks with LR customer care and they can override that.

Full service history with a main dealer is very important for you to get anything out of them also.

The other main thing is that as long as you can convince them its a fault with the engine and not driver abuse (running without oil), then you have leverage.

Finally , as far as i am aware , recon FL2 Td4 engines are currently on backorder from Land Rover.

I know this thread is a good 6 months old now, but i wondered did you manage to get a re-inbursement from LR?

I have a Freelander 2, i've owned it for 17months, it was also 2007 plate with 60k on the clock, I brought extended 12month warranty which ran out 5months ago. Had LR service history, car service due this month. The engine cut out whilst i was on the motorway, Land Rover dealership have said the cam shaft is cracked and they have found bit of metal in the engine, needs a new engine quoted £10k (the car is only worth £11k) Immediately I raised a case with LR HO Customer Services, within 24hrs they advised they will not be reinburse or contribute, because i didn't buy from a LR dealer and it is out of warranty & they claim this hasn't happen before with other Freelanders so therefore claiming it is not due to faulty parts. I escalted the case to the customer service manager but no further help.

Surely they don't build their engines to last 4 years? Any help or advice from anyone who has experienced the same thing would be really beneficial.

That was said in May - has PSA Peugeot Citroën caught up on the back-log of orders yet? Why are re-con engines so much in demand for a car introduced only 5 years ago?

A little bird (who wears overalls with LR on them) tells me they have been replacing a lot of engines that went 'BANG!' recently.

I reckon this problem is more common than LR would like us to know about.

Every query/complaint I ever made to a LR dealer was met with 'Oh, that's never happened before'. Usually quickly followed by 'What did you do to it?'

Perhaps it would be interesting to look on forums for the other cars who use this engine.

I bet they even said that when the HG went on a 1.8 petrol

We had one in earlier in the year. The cam driving the fuel pump broke close to the pump. We have yet to tear down the unit to see if there were any other issues, but I do have the complete unit on a pallet at the moment.

The engines are expensive new/reconditioned - £5644 + VAT for a re-manufactured (LR006856) and £7113 + VAT for a new unit, both stripped engines with block and head. These are twice as much as a TdV6 engine.

The customer decided they wanted to try a second hand unit which we got from CWS in Glastonbury - I couldn't locate any others in the country at the time and they had 3 low mileage ones but they were expensive really. The job ended up being between 5 or 6K once we had to add on a flywheel and clutch kit. Vehicle is still running better than ever.

Hi , I also own a 2007 freelander 2 and I am so glad that I am not the only one with the same problem. The difference is that I was not told what the problem was , since they said that they did not know what the problem is exactly , but had to simply pay for them to start changing the engine and still waiting , and yes there was some sort of metallic sound in the engine and I thought that someone might have put a piece of metal in it on purpose. I have to pay around 24 thousand dollars to have it fixed here in Guatemala city , I haven't driven the car so much and it might have 60,000 kilometers after 5 years of ussage. I did miss the last service , that would be around 8 months , but still, the vehicle was not used that much in such a period of time. So now, if I sell the car, i will be lucky if I get 10,000 dollars back from it. There seems to be a problem in the triptronic gear as well ... I should have just sold the car by parts or sell it to a dumpyard . Please don't missunderstand me, I like the car, but in business wise , that would have been the best ... Going on the road and the engine simply shuts off.

I should also mention the starter button problems I have had since I bought the freelander 2 and how bad it has become and the fact that they cannot fix it at the landrover dealer's shop. and a bar that got bent (my fault for putting something very heavy on the rack) that was holding the back left tire which I asked to have it replaced for about a year until it broke and the tire flipped to a side (thank goodness I was going very slow when that happened) had to get it fixed in another landrover shop, where they fix old Landys So this is probably going to be my second and last landrover , at least in this country.
