freelander 1 jatco fluid problem

Hi there I wonder if anyone can help me, I have just bought a freelander 1 v6 auto and there is transmission fluid leaking from the breather pipe on top of the box, I don't know why it is doing it, I am thinking that it has been over filled. The fluid is leaking out and is spilling onto the exhaust then it starts to smoke when you driving, I really need to fix this problem if anyone can help please do.

Pop to the community forum and introduce yourself.
There is a drain bolt on the box. Unfortunately its next to the bolt that holds the reverse gear!
Can't remember which way round they are. But one of the chaps with more experience of messing with the box will let you know.

sounds like as u say overfilled

here's a pic of the gearbox , thks to hippo

plus if u do a search hippo done a fantastic write up as it has to be done just so and at the correct temperature

done mine a few times , but ive not heard of this personally so see what other replies u get in order all the bases are covered to ensure it is indeed overfilled and not something else

Oh and don't loose the wrong nut as one on the back is a retaining nut for the internal brake band (or similar)

As said, it must be over filled. Don't use it until it's correct or transmission failure will result!!

did think that as i couldn't think of anything else it could be

i assume the garage just filled it up cold and with the engine off in order to overfill it

i assume then it would blow seals etc if it wasnt drained to the correct level

plus riaan , u say youve just bought it, have u reported this to the garage where u got it from as surely they should at least reimburse u with cash so u can at least take it to a reputable garage as i wouldn't let them near it if they've done this to the gearbox

or are u going to do the oil change yourself

Don't drive it like that.

I blow'd my seals by over filling the auto long before we worked out how to fill the auto correctly. The auto was being changed anyway as the torque converter was nackered due to low oil. It was leaking and we didn't know. Topping up was the quick fix but it was over filled. I didn't really care at the time as the replacement was on it's way.

Thanks for all the input guys, I am going to sort the level out today, clean it up and see if it still leaks after that.

I checked the level and almost 2 liters of fluid came out of the 5 mm socket so it was way over filled. Will drive it and see what happens, hope that there is still fluid in the box cos I could not believe that it was so full.

Jesus, not being rude u done it with the engine running and used a thermometer didnt u and went through all the gears and followed the instructions that are on here

seems a huge amount and know its not any of my business but would hate to see u mess ur box up
