Hi all placed this request in the wrong area so am trying again! i have a replacement box and cant find fitting info? have a manual that shows the set up but not the basics, does it come out the bottom and what needs to be removed to clear its path so if anyone has done this lately would really appreciate just a quick summery of what to move out the way before i start the unbolting and any pitfalls you had, i will update this procedure as i go along:)
thanks for the previous help

It's not an easy job. Made harder if you don't have access to workshop equipment.
You will struggle to get the box out on its own. The book suggests taking the gearbox out at the same time as the engine, splitting them once out of the car.
The entire subframe and engine are removed from the bottom, the car being raised up once everything is disconnected.
I have changed a V6 engine from above, this is doable, but it's not at all easy.
The gearbox could be removed with the engine out, but it's not the fastest way to change the box.

Thanks Nodge i do have access to a workshop just cant find a manual on the V6 freelander 1 that explains the procedure, i have spoken with a Rover mechanic who says you can just change the box but cant get hold of him now if i find out more i will post it here

Some tilt the engine/gearbox and remove the gearbox. I would imagine it's difficult to get to all the bolts. I know of a garage who does this in 1 day. Auto is 84kg with no torque convertor and no oil.

When mine was done the main dealer took the whole lot out and changed the auto on the floor, then put it all back, as they have the kit to do it and find it easier.

Burning smell in aft is normally clutch pack's or brake bands. Washing it out won't fix it. They need replaced. While it's apart you might as well recondition it.
