Had this fault on both my mirrors, They can be repaired.
1 Remove internal door car and speaker grill.
2 Unplug the two cables from the mirror sockets
3 Remove mirror 3 x torx bolts and 1 x philips screw.
4 Pop out round disc cover from mirror housing.
5 free cables from sealent and remove mirror from housing.
5 Mark the end cap of the mirror motor assy to main body.
6 remove 4 x torx screws from end cover
7 remove motor assy from housing
8 remove motor from end cap and you will find that one locating pin is sheared off, this is what casuses the banginf noise.
9 Now for the fix, remove sheared pin from locating hole.
10 Drill this hole out to 3mm.
11 Place motor assy back onto end cover, location via the other locating pin, while holding in the correct position drill from the end plate side a 3mm hole into the motor steel cover. ie where the locating pin use to be.
12 Using a suitable self tapper screw secure the motor into position, screw from the end cap into the steel motor housing.
13 the screw must be vertually flush withthe motor cover to ensure correct assembly.
14 rebuild mirror and refit.

I have repaired both my door mirrors with this method and they are still working OK, after one year.

Thanks so much for this. Got my car yesterday and while fiddling about to learn what all the buttons did I managed to fold the mirrors in, but the passenger side one made that noise but did not move back. Definitely worth a try!

Ok looking at this again I take it the pin is located between the motor and bottom motor cover so I need to take the motor away from the bottom cover to expose the area where the gearing is housed, is that correct :(:frusty:

Hi

I have exactly the same problem. The windows fold in but 1 does not go out and comes in as your driving.

It seems loose. I have taken it apart but all the pins seem ok and nothing looks broken

Please help

Glad I found this thread.
I am having the same problem with one of my mirrors. Will look into it sometime soon.

Having replaced both my folding mirrors twice with the same problems I have now fitted the manual fold in/out mirrors. The adjustment of the mirror still works from inside on the control knob. Having spent around £500 in the past on replacement power fold units I purchased the last mirror from ebay for £65.

We have loads of freelanders in at work

If the mirror is faulty or in the wrong position it stops trying to work for a bit

And then a day or so later it will come back to life, even if the gears are broken it will still try

So sometimes it's worth just giving them a breather before you make any decisions

I've never know any of mine to come back to life after a rest when they've
gone they've gone. I have tried repairing them as in the post above but to no avail. Sadly I've spent enough money on power fold replacements and now I'm on manual fold in/out at a fraction of the cost.

Yeah just we've had a few that seem to get confused then give up then try again later

Pretty common thing if they get over worked and or get folded into the wrong position they seem to switch off

They're bloody fragile that's the problem so I don't blame you for going to manual fold

Just fixed my right side mirror.
Pin on motor housing was sheared as posted in this thread.

This is how I fixed it:

Drilled thru remainders of sheared pin in motor enclosure:

Cut a .255" piece from a longer 3/32" rolled pin:

Inserted in the base :

And fitted together.
Works great.

Hi peeps I just brought a 2004 freelander td4. My drivers side power mirror works fine now thanks to this tread, but the passenger side flaps in the wind literally. When I use the switch it makes all the right noises, but no movement. Any ideas?

I wonder if the gear has stripped it's teeth. Yer will need to take it apart and see wot has gone wrong. Electrical noises would make yer think the electrics is ok.

Cheers will see if I can do it this weekend
Hi, I'm a new member. I have had this folding problem since I bought my Freelander 1 ten years ago. I have also had aproblem with a parasitic drain, Sometimes it can drain the battery overnight. Other times it is still OK after a fortnight. I have tried amny fixes to the mirrors themselves including disconnecting them. However, I think I have solved the problem. I suspected the mirror solenoid which is on the A pillar behind the glove box. I could head a strange clicking noise which when I checked was coming from the solenoid. When I investigated it it was warm even though the temperature outside was 4 deg. I replaced the solenoid ( It's a Ford so much cheaper than Landrover spare) Both mirrors now work perfectly at the first touch. I had already bought a n/s mirror believing that it was Faulty. Maybe it wasn't after all. The parasitic drain has now one away. Hopefully!!
