To all of you guys who suggested I replace the HG while doing water pump and cam belt. NOBODY LIKES A SMART ARSE!!!
OK so you were right after all. Mayo in the oil. :(

So a big weekend coming up I just ordered, clutch and headgasket kits from here
Discount MG Rover Spares
Knew about the clutch for a few weeks now but just found mayo in the dipstick on Saturday so going to do both next weekend (also probably several evenings next week) and as I haven't done either before on a Freelander I'm not sure which order to do them in. Any suggestions as to the best way to tackle these jobs welcome.
Ordered so far
Payen BW750 K Series (VVC) Elastomer Head Gasket Kit | Discount MG Rover Spares
L Series (Diesel) 228mm Clutch Kit - URF000131 / URF000132. Fits Rover | Discount MG Rover Spares
Still to get Gearbox oil, engine oil, Coolant, and need a torque wrench suitable for the 20Nm as mine starts at 30Nm. Anything I've forgotten about?

Cheers guys. I just love my Freelander

Have ordered head bolts along with the gasket kit. They are listed as 10x Genuine BGA Head Bolts.
The seller has a good name in MG Rover circles so fairly confident they are good. I had considered using the original bolts but as I know the HG has been replaced before I have no faith in them. The ones I removed from my MGF are original MG so could even use them but I will use the new ones and hope for the best.

I took it all out as one (engine, gearbox and IRD) and worked on the engine in my garage! Replaced the clutch whilst it was easy to work on. I used some pattern head bolts and had hgf within 3 months! The genuine ones were still going strong 18 months later!

All the work was done on my drive, it took me 10 days to complete the work. This was because I didn't order everything to start with and spent more time waiting for parts than working on the car!

BGA head bolts are fine as is the Payen elastopolymer gasket ;)

Mmmm, not happy. I ordered the parts on Monday around 2pm and just checked the tracking and it shows as not picked up yet, plus the seller DMGRS is not replying to my emails. I need the parts for this weekend as concerned the HG might go any time so thinking I might have to cancel the order and buy locally. Only as the seller won't reply to my emails I can't be sure they aren't on the way.
Very disappointed in the seller as had high hopes for him.

Just to update on this seller. The parts arrived on the following Monday so three days late. Not a big deal if ordering non essential luxuries but parts for a car which is off the road are essentials, so would have expected a faster response and worse I lost the whole weekend working at it. I don't believe they were posted for two or three days after putting the order in so he can't even blame the courier.
I guess the worst part of the transaction was the non response to emails and as he doesn't have a phone number on the site I couldn't call him.
On the positive side his prices are good and the parts good quality but I don't think I will be using him again.

He is probably using a JIT/ drop ship system for certain parts to save on stock lying around costs.

Not actually in stock, so sent from a central supplier maybe.

These mongolian fake Payen gaskets are a bit of a worry, apparently the market is flooded with them. You should be ok tho...i hope.

I don't think the gasket is likely to be fake (at least I hope not) but I emailed these guys at 11am Tue 17th ordered it at 2pm and it arrived next day at 1pm. Top service, good price and good quality part. Wish all retailers were as good
ROVER 25 45 75 K SERIES UPRATED LADDER OIL RAIL ALSO FREELANDER | eBay

Nice one :)

You can tell the fake ones. They have a Yak printed on the top of the gasket. It says "This Yak upwards" in Mongolian. Dead give away if you ask me.

Oh bugger! Mine must be fake then cause it had yak and made in mongolia stamped on it.

Damm!, just in time to be too late!.

Saying that, there is no record of a Yak ever blowing a gasket in Mongolia...so maybe it will be ok...lol!

Nice one, a man with a sense of humour :)

Hmmmfff, sense of humour my arse, i thought you were serious.[emoji45]
Actually it was outer Mongolia on the packaging. Does that make any difference?

Without doubt, the outer Mongolian ones are supposed to be the worst.

Apparently the Yak gut they use for the elastomer seals just isnt as good. Its something they don't feed them. Makes the difference between 2000 mile failure or a 50.000 miles service life.

Just goes to show, you have to be careful what you feed your yak. Especially if its an unleaded grain only Yak.

Best just scrap it now and be done with it :(

Bloody Mongols!

Am not sure you can say that nowadays. They are a "semi nomadic agriculturally reliant ethnic group". So you cant have a go at them.

Listen, i wouldn't want to see you lose out...Gi ya £50 for it mate?...Chuck in all the bits and i'll organize a trailer. Always glad to help

:D

I'd change the gasket for long term reliability ;)
According to all the "experts" hereabouts they only last three weeks anyway so won't be long.
