You good folk helped me with advice on the oil and filter change which has now been done ! Thanks !:)

I want to change the other filters (which i have gained info from the site)

1) the turbo filter (delimiting valve) is this the round egg like tube on the right hand side with small breather pipes to it ? and is it easy to fit ?

2)Pollen filter "where is it ?" and again is it easy to fit /

3) Air filter no probs think i can manage that one !

The Crankcase breather looks fine ! is there any other areas i should be checking engine wise ?

checked brakes and all fine, so just want to complete the above so my wife and I can then run it through this year ready to do it again next (but at least with yur help i can do it no probs nxt time round)

Have you got a RAVE CD? If not, you need one - This will answer these for you!

Do a search on the forum for RAVE and you will find about 3 million links....!!!

Cheers

Cheers ! knew nothing about this rave CD

tried downloading it and well 1/2 hour to download then it would not work/open then it got PC techincal and i gave up ! and ordered one via ebay ! so should have it in a couple of days.

ordered the filters (oil and filter i have already done) so this cd-rom should point me in the right direction for fitting the rest of the filters !

The pollen filter is on the passenger side under the glove box if you put your head under you can see it only 4 screws 2 mins to do its a rectangle shape.

nfn: Filter changing priorities:
Now you've changed the oil filter make sure you also change:

a. The fuel filter
b. The crankcase depression limiting valve filter or oil separator as LR call it. If you can't just buy the filter(oil separator) then change the whole valve unit (cheaper from BMW dealer.

'Rave' will show where they are and how to do it.
When they're done note mileage and date so that you can change them again at the recommended interval.

If everybody carried out these straightforward procedures when they first get their TD4's there would be far less very expensive problems to sort out.

BTW the 'round egg like filter' you refer to is a very low priced universal fuel filter obtainable from any good accessory shop. It's purpose on the TD4 is simply to filter the air being drawn into the engine driven vacuum pump.

Put the time in now to sort out the priorities and check the common problems then you can fully enjoy the TD4 power and versatility. Dann...

Hello Dann - how much is it from a BMW dealer and do you have the BM part number?

Bm price is approx £25 for complete depression limiting valve inc filter (oil separator unit) as opposed to LR price of £50 (why are we not surprised?) you could search forum for depression limiting valve as part Nos are there. I took off the unit and marched into BM parts shop and simply said 'one of these please' BM parts guys fantastic customer care. No sharp intakes of breath or carefully rehearsed indifference which you get from LR Muppets.
Please stay with this one until you get a result as this filter (oil separation unit) is vital for the well being of the awesome TD4 engine and turbo charger.

Thank you for the info. I actually had the unit fitted at a main dealer service a year ago, they charged me £19.35 plus vat for it, it took me ages to find out what it was when I queried the item on the bill! They have been on e-bay for about £20.

Ok thanks.

if it were 19.25 + vat as part of sevice it would have been just the filter and not the valve ? as the filter kit is £20+ vat from LR ? i've seen second hand complete valve and filter for £35 !

So hence why LR want £50 for the whole thing, so if charged £19 then its just the filter.

but its worth me popping into a BM dealer to find out the price for theres complete as there selling for £20 ish just for the filter on fleabay !

but bet mine has not been changed ! hence why i did my research on the filters as for under £60 the engine can breathe and run as it should.

my company has some Bm320d in there fleet and three have blown turbo's at around 80k !(and are under three years old) whats the betting it down to this filter ? and it not being changed every 12k ? think theres a theme or moral to this post ! "change the friggin filter" its not worth the risk !

According to the part number it was the assembly. I went to the parts store, gave the number and asked to see it. I was told I could buy the filter on it's own at a price of, IIRC, about £3.

Be nice to know what part of the turbo actually failed, if it was the bearing it could point to the oil quality.

Looked up some old posts, friend Shutty bought one LR8510298 from main dealer for £ 25.26 inc vat.

Yeah i'll pop in to LR and BM and find out first before i part with "cash"

Oil and oil filter done !

got the pollen filter/air/and Fuel filter today from car shop Mahle filters so good ! so will fit them the weekend.

as for the Bm320d turbos going no one ever really wants to know why ? as there lease cars and under warranty still, i even spoke to one driver and he just shrugged his shoulders and said "dunno" BM sorted it and went on to bore with how he had to have a crap hire car for a week !

any one changed to TD4 fuel filter ? waiting for my rave CD ! not come yet, looks simple just to pipes each end ?

but any tips ?
