lol, I'm pending. Once accepted you'll know me - same profile pic :)

The cover pic on my FB page has been "Freelander appropriate" for a while - click on it, it opens up to a quite impressive wide-angle.

That's on the Waimakariri River that runs along the north side of Christchurch, its at least a KM, probably a mile, wide 'braided' river. So most of the time its just like in that pic, just gravel with the river running in a couple of channels. Once or twice a year though, when it rains heavy up in the mountains (about 100KMs away) a few hours later the water reaches the Chch area and within 1/2 an hour the whole width becomes a raging torrent. Its very impressive. Depending how long it rains it may take a week or 2 to go back down and once again its just gravel with the river running in new channels. The gravel originated as ' broken off bits of the mountains' and millions of tons of the stuff gets washed down the river during these floods. Its amazing to think that anything survives these floods, but its a good Trout fishing river, so they do, and late summer there's a great Salmon run on it as well.
