Hi Guys
I have a weird problem with my V6. When using the 'box in normal auto mode, it seems to work fine, but when in "sport" mode and acceleraing hard it seems to change down momentarily when changing up from 3rd to 4th. Really weird! up to 5K in 3rd, then up to 6K and then down to 3.5-4 in 4th.
Any ideas? (PLEASE dont tell me new box required!)

Hi really hard to tell on this 1 without test driving it,but on a plus side i do have a brand new gearbox for sale at a really good price, tiga

hi-mad hat
had this problem myself when i first got my 2002 v6 es, local dealer sorted it out, its the ecu for the auto box, and the censors for the drive.
did your have a re-call ? all v6 auto should have had a re-fit with new ecu and censors, ( land rover foot the bill ) after that fine.
or could be your engin ecu is out of sink with your gearbox ecu, get it re-set at your local dealer, the change is fab, gos like a rocket after.

hi mad hat,
is your garage a main dealer ? if so there not on the ball !
ask them to simply tap in your reg number and it will come up on the land rover owner web, that will tell them if the car has had the re-call or not !
this gives them every bit of info on your car, last time it was serviced, any work done under warrenty, every thing.
if there not going to do this, take it to another land rover dealer that will.
ask them to plug up the cars ecu, and re-set to factory settings, if this action does not clear your problem, you should also be able to find out from this if the car has had the re-fit.

hope this helps.. v6

Thanks V6
yes - they are local Landy dealers - they just tell me "computer says no!" - well actually "there are no outstanding recalls on your Freelander!"

bum - that seems like it might have been done - and this could be expensive!?

Hi there is a manual reset for the jatco box but that has never had that much effect to be honest, the recall only affected certain gearbox build nos and was a change of ecu and speed pick up sensor in gearbox,i have had good results fitting a new gearbox ecu,but your problem i have not had before sounds a bit like the clutches slipping in the gearbox but odd if it only happens in step tronic mode,i have had good results fitting a north american spec ecu to cure poor harsh upshift, you can fit a gearbox ecu yourself it has already been flash programmed and does not need reflashing so plug in and drive,if you are in the market for a gearbox im open to offers as i have a brand new 1 sat at work, tiga

Thanks Tiga
I am baulking at gearbox change at the mo - just changed inlet manifold - spent a grand in 2 months - still got leaky heater rad and thermostat housing leak to fix  , so I am hoping that I mite get some good luck soon:rolleyes:

next time I am down your way, I might ask to pop in and see you - I go to Taunton/Washford regularly.

What is the difference between the NA ECU and a UK ECU? What performance characteristics are changed - do you know?

I've noticed my gearbox is performing the same. Have a Freelander GS V6 but the problem occurs when shifting up between 4th and 5th gears in both auto and sequential mode. Seems to only happen when I'm giving her some welly though. Gets to 5000rpm in 4th but just before engaging 5th gear it revs up to around 6000rpm.
I'm kind of hoping that it will be a simple sensor change. I understand gearboxes are a little bit expensive.
Does any one know where the gearbox number is stamped? I can then go and see my local Landrover dealer and see if it needs ECU and/or sensor replaced.

hi on,y new to the site, seems good though, i shall let u know that u should have a recall carried changes the speed sensor in the auto box then should have a download on a new ecu if this dosen fix ya prob might need a new box, hope this helps

I'll have to chase Land Rover about the recall. I assume they want the chasis, enigne and gearbox numbers?
The vehicle has done 37k miles so I hope it isn't the gearbox. That's a poor life span if it's worn out all ready. Never been used for towing either, well, no tow bar and no sign of one ever being fitted.

Hi mad hat man. . . Sounds to me after reading your thread, that you've more than likely got a sensor problem ,if what you say is correct, that in auto mode she drives OK, but in sports mode it plays up, [what is it like in manual gear select] can you get 1,2,3,and 4 OK, however your dealer must chase up all re call mods, but i dont think that is your problem, as you've driven it for some 36,000 without this problem,if you had say the torque plates slipping this would effect both modes. . .

Hi Ming, thanks for the reply. My gearbox is playing up in both auto and manual modes. I tested all the gears last night on the way home from work. 4th to 5th is still the worst but I noticed that 3rd to 4th has similar problems (not nearly as bad though). From what you said it sounds like the torque plates might be slipping then? Is this an expensive fix? Can a D.I.Y. mechanic carry this job out or is it a specialised LR job?
Also, I've only had the car 3 months so I think the LR recall scenario may be a no go. Upside is I still have a warranty which covers gearbox and transimission :D

Ming, thought I was going mad. You edited the "Hi Marksurry" to "Hi Mad hat man". Read my reply and thought "I swear he addressed the reply to me !!!"

Yes sorry bout that did an edit change [so your not going mad] no matter as you both had same type of problem, would not recommend a diy job ,unless you knew for sure that the gearbox was shot [100%] however in your case your OK get them to sort it a s a p under your warranty. . .

Looks like a trip to the dealers tonight then. Warranty can foot the bill rather than me. Bet there's small print that excludes anything that slips

Modulator valve? dunno if they have one can give the same problem...? funny just been talking about that in my other post I done tonight!!!

Bad news!!!
Local Landrover agent says its the gearbox. Also say thaey have to change ECU at same time - something about the gearbox ECU has learned this gearbox and cant learn new one:confused: !! Want to charge me £3300 for new box and ECU:eek: . Good news is that includes fitting and VAT!!!! . Not bd for 67000 miles.

Anyone got a 'box and ECU just sitting around?
TigaPiglet - HELP!
